Reginald 0 #2 August 30, 2005 You will find that many jumpers are in their mid thirties plus and settled into good careers. It’s an expensive sport and personally, I could have never afforded it in any way, shape or form until after I was out of school. I’m sure there are plenty of enterprising people that can give you some advice like, “move into a trailer and pack for jump money”. Best of luck to you. joebud321 0 #4 August 30, 2005 hi brett i dont think your on your own here.....lots ov us younger jumpers struggle...u gota remember a lot are still paying for education, first steps to owning homes, maybe having kids,,,its true that older skydivers seem to have more expendable cash!....my view is that its a marathon not a sprint !!...if were lucky we will have life time to clock these jumps up!!....i plan my whole life round skydiving,, from my next job (closer to the dz) to my retirement
darkwing 5 #5 August 30, 2005 I'm a chunky, older skydiver, and I pay for my jumps by having the skydiving babes pay me to have sex with them. If that doesn't cover my jumping dollar needs, I have a real job too. Youthful jumpers might consider becoming packers. My dz is often short of packers. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

PhreeZone 20 #8 August 30, 2005 I managed to do about 350 jumps, buy nice gear, do a Summerfest boogie trip, a Lake Wales winter trip and still have enough $ to get a camera and all the goodies that entails while in college. I never got a dime from anyone to pay for school or living while I was in school either. I worked full time at a profesional level job and did full time classes. Taking 19 credit hours and working 40-50 hours a week wears you out but its all in your priorities. I wanted to jump hard so I would wear myself out all week working and studying to get the time and $ on the weekends needed to jump. If you want something... you have to work hard to get it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
wmw999 2,507 #9 August 30, 2005 I did it by having no credit cards and a car I'd paid cash for. I cooked all my own food, and rode my bike whenever possible. Yes, the car was a heap, but it was a paid-for heap. I had a roommate in my apartment, too. I made about 60-70 jumps in the last 2 years of college. BTW, this was in the 70's, and I was paying my own way -- being an impoverished college student is not a new invention. It's an expensive sport. So is being a college student, depending on how you do it. But if you do it on your money, instead of on credit cards, at least then you know exactly where you are. So I'd say pay off the credit cards first, then plan your budget so you know how much you can spend. scrublink 0 #10 August 30, 2005 Sell the car. Take the proceeds from the sale and pay off the cards. Live like a monk, work your tail off and drive a piece of crap. If you want to jump on limited funds you have to prioitize and sacrifice. It isn't smart to use credit to satisfy your wants. Credit is for your needs. Think about packing, especially tandems or for a team. The work is steady and in the case of most teams they are willing to pay cash. (They expect you to report it as income to government) I am middle aged now and still struggle to pay for my jumps. I got a couple of ratings to take the sting out. In the future you can do that too. I know several people who only afford to jump because they are tandem mules, Just a few random thoughts on the subject.

DrewEckhardt 0 #12 August 30, 2005 QuoteOkay, as a college student working p/t I can just afford my old card bills and a car payment~ HOW'D YOU AFFORD IT ?!?! I'm still working on my A I got by on little money in college by living within my means. That meant Totino's Party Pizzas (6 for $5), renting a room ($300/month) with shared utilities instead of having my own apartment, no cable TV, no stereo, and no credit card debt. I had no car payment (you can get a functional car for $500) or the comprehensive+collision insurance coverage that is required for a car loan. I bicycled everywhere within a few mile radius so I pretty much only paid for gas when I went snowboarding ($200-$400 season passes) and split the bill with someone. Was homeless for a month one year to pay for my ski pass. I didn't skydive then either. I got by on some money by doing everything the same except starting skydiving with a used rig (no AAD), eating better, and buying a stereo. Then I worked for a decade and increased my income 10X from what I had as a student.

I'm still working on my A Unimpressed Man, I can definately agree here. My AFF this summer wasn't bad because i had an internship to fund my jumps, but since i'm back at school, its harder. I just recently got a job working in one of the dining halls, plus i'm gonna do some packing at my DZ here, and i work for a spring break company. So thats how i'm trying to fund my jumping. I'm also saving up for the Eloy christmas boogie this year, which will be my first boogie. Classes dont start until sept. 6th, so its not bad now, but hey, whatever I can get in order to pay for it. If i have to hitchhike from michigan to eloy, i will. So i know how you feel dude, i'm working on my A right now too.....Puttin' some stank on it. ----Hellfish #707----
MB38 0 #14 August 30, 2005 I work 42 hours a week and attend 18 hours of classes every week. I take the money that doesn't get taken for school, gas and food and hand it directly to the dropzone.I really don't know what I'm talking about.
somethinelse 0 #15 August 30, 2005 I CAN'T really afford it- BUT when I Am jonesing for a jump BAD, I "pinch my pennies", or do without something or other, and try to get in A JUMP ! Ya,See, I'm in the p/t job situation like you, too... PLUS I don't have my own gear YET. so I have to rent my gear, But A jump is better than NO jump! soulshine 0 #16 August 30, 2005 QuoteBut A jump is better than NO jump! Hmm... that statement bothers me a bit. I don't know you or your currency level, and I am in no way an expert, but I am observant. I have noticed many things and seen a few accidents that could have been prevented with just a bit of patitence and currency. If you are having such a hard time financing your hobby then maybe it's time to take a step back and reasses your priorities. Maybe you could take a break from jumping, pay off the old cards, and when you are done with school and your debt is under control then you will be in a better position to afford your gear and the number of jumps that you want to do yearly. Set a goal, to be abe to jump with you own gear and to do several a month, and then work for it. If you want it bad enough then you will find a way. good luck. flyangel2 2 #17 August 30, 2005 When I was just starting out skydiving, I was in college and broke. Lucky for me the DZO taught me how to pack and that's how I paid for most of my jumps while in college.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. indyz 1 #18 August 31, 2005 I cut my expenses to the bare minimum. Eliminating fast food from my diet is saving me close to $30 a week, and I'm loosing weight. I have a job close to home, so I'm only burning a quarter-tank of gas a week to get there and back (I'd ride my bike if I could just to save another $6 a week). I'm working on Saturdays because it pays overtime and I can still jump Friday or Sunday. I'm taking little side jobs that I used to turn down even though they suck. Most of us spend money on a lot of little things that we don't really need. They might not seem like they cost much individually, but add it all up and it's a significant chunk of change. Find what you can cut, and cut it.

When I was in school there was this chick Sallie Mae, she was real cool, she loaned me money to buy rigs and jumps, it was at the lowest interest rate I have ever seen and she didnt make me pay it back until I graduated. OSOK 0 #21 August 31, 2005 Not only am I an Assistant Manager at a major retail company, but I also got a part-time at the DZ as a packer. It's extra money, but best of all it comes with some pretty nice discounts. My car recently broke down; it's staying broken for a while. I'm not taking from my skydiving money to fix it.
