So what really constitutes a cross country?How many miles out, depending on uppers and such? Any one do this Much. Is it a CRW jump with friends? Need a compass or road map? Thoughts? Comments? What about ATC. AggieDave 6 #2 April 2, 2003 I've done a handful of Cross Countries. They're fun. A nice way to end a day of jumping, go do a cross country with friends. Generally, I don't do CReW on cross countries, but I have been known to toss a quick 2 stack together. I've done 3 miles and I've done around 9 miles, with quite a few inbetween. It all really depends on what the uppers are doing. Compass and a road map? Naw. You can see the sun, you know which way you're facing. You can look down and see where you're at and where you're going. The ATC? Shit, I don't know, I've never talked to them, although I'm sure the pilots has mentioned it to them before "jumpers away, x miles from Coulter Field, 12,000ft..."--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Hmmmm... No problem finding our way back, you could see the airport from 13 miles out (of course Walterboro is a big airport) A cell phone is probably a good idea. We went out 13 miles and flew back 7. My longest is about 11 miles, my shortest was 2 miles that was supposed to make 5 Yes, it is up to the DZO, usually no problem at a Cessna dz, a busy turbine DZ is a different story. Make sure the pilot, or all pilots in the case of multiple aircraft, know about it before hand ATC will want to know (in my experience). Our pilot follows us down, allowing ATC to keep us in sight and avoid any problems. GroundZero 0 #8 April 3, 2003 I love cross country jumps... my longest was 32 Nautical miles... but the story jp is talking about was when i took my handheld com radio and was talking to Nashville radio while under canopy at about 13000'... just for shits and giggles, I called Nashville radio to get the winds aloft... i was jumping A Falcon 300 and used the callsign Foxtrot 300, I didn't want to use "Falcon" because that's another type of airplane... so I used the Foxtrot... Nashville Radio gave me the winds as requested ... "310 at 22 knots at 3000, 320 at 38 knots at 6000,"then came a breif pause... Foxtrot 300, Say type aircraft" to which I replied, "a Falcon 300 square foot parachute... he continued with "330 at 48 knots at niner thousand", then paused and asked me to comfirm "Parachute?" and asked location and destination. I responded that Yes I was a parachute over the Shelbyville VOR and that I couldn't say destination 'til he gave me the winds at 12000. He told me something like 320 degrees at 53 knots at 12000... and I announced my destination would be Tullahoma, full stop landing. After I landed, I found out that he even called the airport to confirm a parachute inbound from Shelbyville to Tullahoma... A friend of mine had a REEEEEALLY close encounter with some fast moving aircraft recently, and we have had some incursions lately, right through our airspace. This is a private airport. I don't think I would go with fewer than 3 or 4 canopies for visibilty's sake. Still it sounds like fun. I have made a few x-countries and always went with at least one other person. Turned out to be a wise move in one case when one of the group (of 8 or so) had a malfunction and had to cut away at 13k, 5+ miles out . Four others landed with the victim and helped with recovery of the main and freebag, while the rest of us returned to the DZ to get the "rescue" underway. Exit over the Bonzai Pipeline looking at Sunset Beach, fly back past Waiamea Bay and Haleiwa to Dillingham. As long as you kept blue on the right and green on the left, no chance of getting lost. A friend of mine took a malted, carbonated beverage with him and enjoyed it while watching the sunset. Can you imagine?Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics. bbarnhouse 0 #22 April 4, 2003 We did a XC at the DZ.Com Holiday Boogie. One full DC-3 and a full Otter..65 in all ..a DZ.Com record. Everyone made it back and it was beautiful.
