FFlyer 0 #1 July 26, 2005 I would have normally never even bothered about this, but since I ruptured both my eardrums at the beginning of the year skydiving, im far more cautious when it comes to things that might affect my ears. My current job involves a lot of travelling and I am sometimes out of the country all week and arrive back on friday just in time to go to the dropzone the next day to skydive. Does airtravel affect you in any way that I should be worried about in terms of skydiving soon after arriving back? Does anyone have any knowledge about this sort of thing? Thanks
jurgencamps 0 #2 July 26, 2005 No problem (unless you are tired). It is something complete different with flying and scubadiving.
Tonto 1 #3 July 26, 2005 No Problems. Low then High = problem (Scuba then Sky) but not for your ears. You may bend. High then high again = no problem. Commercial airliners pressurise to about 7000ft AMSL Max. tIt's the year of the Pig.
Peej 0 #4 July 26, 2005 I travelled from Johannesburg to New York and on to LA, arriving in Perris after roughly 24 hours straight of flying and driving. i woke up the next day and was jumping by mid morning. No worries. Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky

kelpdiver 2 #6 July 27, 2005 dehydration may be your biggest concern. A long flight can definitely take your fluid levels down, and that has subtle effects on mind and performance.

Kris 0 #8 July 27, 2005 QuoteHow did you rupture your eardrums skydiving? If someone jumps while congested they run the risk of sinus pain, blown eardrums, or even worse, a ruptured sinus. Seeing someone come down with a ruptured sinus once was interesting. The phrase "spewing blood" comes to mind, and it takes surgery to fix it. If I'm feeling stuffy, I'll take some non-drowsy dayquil to open me up. If I can't clear my ears after that, then the sky isn't going anywhere and I'll just jump another day.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
FFlyer 0 #9 July 27, 2005 QuoteHow did you rupture your eardrums skydiving? I was getting over having mild flu and was slightly conjested. Thats all it took I didnt notice anything was wrong untill I was under canopy and I then noticed that I couldnt hear anything. I landed on the ground and still couldnt hear anything but had a slight ringing in my ears and it felt like they were filled with water (which I later found out was blood). I had to take 2 months off while my ears healed.
skiskyrock 0 #10 July 27, 2005 It is worse when you travel on a commercial flight after skydiving. At 1000 feet I unbuckle my seat belt, and by 15000 I'm crouched by the rear door waiting for the green light to come on. Stewardeses hate that.

Reminds me of a story. When I was younger I asked if I could visit the flight deck during a commercial flight. The captain said sure and told me to bring my stuff from the overhead lockers up to the front of the plane. Still at cruising height I walked past one of the stewardesses with personal effects in hand. She said, looking somewhat confused: "You can't get off yet sir". The only thing worse than a cold toilet seat is a warm toilet seat.
