Something to try in the plane

Recommended Posts

I had someone ask me if I could whistle while in the plane at about 12,000'. After I said yes they said to try it. I couldn't do it, and of course he could. Another effect of density altitude I guess. Have you ever tried this? Can you do it?

I've actually tried this before. Its not hard to whistle at altitude, if you just realize what's going on. Basically that you need more air to whistle so you have to create that air by using a faster airstream. Much like playing the upper register on a trumpet (I've played trumpet for nearly 12 years now).

Now, beyond being fun and funny to do in the plane, what can people take away from this venture? An understanding of how your body works and the air at altitude. Simply put it gives you an example on how your body is getting less air up there, so its not too hard to make yourself hypoxic and possibly create a very dangerous situation for yourself and other jumpers.

Ah, so the key to this "very important" skydiving skill is to blow harder/faster. I was trying to re-shape my lips for a smaller opening. Nice work on finding "lesson" in there for us that has real value. (hypoxia example)

I can just see it now.I am going to try to whistle on the plane this weekend. Reminds of the email that said that "no one can lick their elbow"

This is too damn funny.

If I can do it, I will send you an audio of Mayberry RFD, on the way to altitude

No! Stop! Whistling in an aircraft is bad luck. There are many ATC recordings where someone whistling in the cockpit immediately precedes whatever bad thing happened.

I even yelled at a guy for whistling whilst we were standing on a building getting ready to jump.

Come to think of it, pretty much every ATC recording of a serious air disaster is preceded by the pilot declaring an emergency. If I ever hear a pilot of an Otter try to do that I'm going to have to stop him.

No, but I've heard a few girls whistling on nude skydives.

And they were even smiling when they whistled! :D

Be safe.

it wont increase the risk of hypoxia,
as pilots, we've done hypobaric training in decompression chambers and are taught to maintain a slow breathing cycle. fast breathing will increase heart-rate and consequently lead to hyperventilation. so i would guess that whistling will naturally slow down one's breathing..

happy noisemaking!
