Lists of riggers' "saves"

Recommended Posts

Just for fun,
here are web pages that have lists of "saves", where a rigger or loft lists their reserve pack jobs that got used.
Any others out there?

Other riggers mention their total of saves but haven't spent the time to put them all online.

http://www.chutingstar.com/saves.php

http://www.parachuteriggers.com/saves.htm

http://web.ionsys.com/~pchapman/saves.htm
(That's my own modest list.)

Similar but not quite in the same category are a number of save stories from users of Precision reserves:
http://www.precision.aero/saves.htm

Then there's the big list that Airtec keeps on Cypres saves:

is this common?? i've never heard of it happening. did they hit their shoulder on the door?
i didn't lose my mind, i sold it on ebay. .:need a container to fit 5'4", 110 lb. cypres ready & able to fit a 170 main (or slightly smaller):.[/ce

I have seen it a couple of times. Last year, during 10-way practice, one of my teammates had this happen. It was a rough exit for several of us. He opened his reserve, but at a good altitude.

Many years ago I was in the air with a guy who dislocated a shoulder also, but it wasn't on exit.

when I see (or hear of) a reserve I've packed being used I don't consdier it a "save" - there's a quiet sense of satisfaction that I did my job properly, but the person using the rig saved their own life by pulling the right handles in the correct order.

The best packed reserve in the world and the equipment maintained to the highest standards won't do a damned thing unless the jumper pulls the handles..........

I've always thought it a little egotistical to claim a "save" when you weren't under the actual canopy that malfunctioned (just my $0.02)

I understand what you mean, but for those two seconds after he pulled the reserve handle, it was pretty much out of his hands, and it was all in yours. Believe me, while he was releasing the brakes he was thinking, "thank you, Sid . . ."

It's a tradition that we call them saves, and if he shows up at your loft with a bottle of Scotch, for sure don't be all humble and digging your toe in the dirt. Sending him away with the idea it was all him and well, gee, I like Scotch too.

The darker side of this would be a reserve failing, for whatever reason, and the rigger saying the jumper messed up. You see how it works? You can't do that. Accepting the Scotch, and the responsibility is so much better . . .

So, go ahead, you saved him; you don't have to count them, but call it that way.

And BTW, on your last one, nice save, brother . . .

I just looked at the Chutingstar page. I noticed that one person had 15 reserve rides on there! That's a lot of Guiness!

Indeed - one that got my attention was Mike Gruwell with 5 reserve rides in 6 months, two on a tandem two weeks apart. Thats gotta stop being fun after a point...

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The fun soon pales.

My last couple of tandem reserve rides in Hemet, California were with tandem level two students.

"You see that broken line on the right side?
We don't want to land this.
(laying cutaway handle on his right shoulder) pull this red handle and arch some more."

I appreciate theres something educational about that situation, but as the saying goes... rather you than me :P

I remember someone (Tonto? AggieDave) saying they didn't do tandems anymore after 3 basically back to back cutaways... Forgive me if I've got the names muddled.

He never bought a single case for the loft>:(

All of those were on his personal Vector tandem system packed by himself or his girlfriend.

Anyway...he's a rigger himself now, jumping at another DZ and I'm sure packing his own, saving him a bit of money if he's still having the same rate of malfunctions.:P

I tend to agree with you. I may have inspected it, certified it as airworthy and packed it up, but it was the jumper with a wad of shit above his/her head that made it work. jmo

But if they insist, I will take the bottle of Kettle One and pat them on the back and say “Good job, will done, faithful service a copy of this will be made a part of your permanent record”.B|
