kaxter 0 #1 June 8, 2005 I know this sounds really wierd, but I am not affraid of anything about the whole experiece but a hard opening. I had heard of some people that have really hurt thier backs by having hard openings and I was wondering how commen it was. I will be doing a tandem jump. I am SO excited to go that it is all I think about all day long.:)
Antidote 0 #2 June 8, 2005 Hard openings do happen, but it's not the norm. Opening so hard you hurt your back is even more rare. A lot of it is in how the canopy is packed - there are some stochastic variables but the most deciding factor is how it is packed. Go out and enjoy yourself. Bring this issue up with your tandem master and I am sure he can give you a much more detailed and satisfactory explanation of the things involved
ccowden 0 #3 June 8, 2005 I have done about 700 tandems and can honestly say that out of those 700, I have maybe had 10 openings that hurt. But none that caused any damage or prolonged pain. It happens, but it is not common. And to be honest with you, I have had some hard openings with tandems where the student didn't even notice because of the adrenaline and excitment. Once you get in freefall and see how amazing it is, you wil forget all about the opening part and won't be worried. Have fun!
popsjumper 2 #4 June 8, 2005 What? Was there an opening shock on my tandem? I don't remember that...hell I don't remember the opening at all...except for the sceaming....I told him to knock it off and he did. Not to worry about a hard opening. Worry instead about pissin' your pants. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. Soon it will be "I can't buy that, it costs 2 jumps!" Once it's got you, there's no turning back... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Ya we'll rape the local objects, and maybe do some jumps too!" beezyshaw 0 #6 June 9, 2005 If you jump any of the modern-day tandem canopies it shouldn't be a problem; just make sure they don't have a Strong 425 and you'll be fine!
