Don't get hurt at ASC or the Farm

Recommended Posts

My grandmother always got a bill from the fire department for the ride to the hospital the few times she needed it.

My office gets a bill every time the fire department comes to inspect the place (exit lights working, etc) - and we did not ask them to come, they just knock and come in.

So, I joked with friends... What is the bill if your house is on fire? Since insurance will pay for the house, and it proabably will be a total loss, why not just tell the fire department, "No thanks, let it burn baby burn."

But back to topic.... If the EMTs are gonna charge a skydiver for a ride to a hospital, it seems they should be able to charge for onsite help with no ride too... Kind of sucks though... I think I would climb out of a tree to save $750, especially since as a kid I climbed out of trees for no reason at all.:P

It doesn't take effect until June 15th. So all the tree landings are free as of now. Maybe we should all climb a tree and call them out just to really piss them off..lol

I have the tree over the pond so when they show up i'll just jump in. All seriousness though. I'm sure the EMT's and Fire Dept hate this just as much as we do. It could cause injury to people if they deceide they can't or won't call them due to financial reasons.
Well, just don't vote them bastards in next time>:(

We have a really good relationship with the local EMS in our town. We have even managed to persuade some of them to jump.
If it is a quiet day the police and EMS guys just come watch the jumping and have a Coke in the bush pub.

We also have a contract with the local mining hospital and each member of the club paid $3 to join. Basically admin.
This covers the basic care if you arrive and need some help urgently, before you want to ship out to a private hospital closer to home.

If you then use the ambulance, you would then pay extra or claim from your medical insurance.

They are really fantastic and even made up a first aid kit for us with basic bandages and neck braces etc.

We love our paramedics - They scrape us off the ground!!

I think true friendship is under-rated

I was told by the director of Polk County EMS that tree landings at the dropzone located at airport have caused them to use Cobb and Bartow County Fire and Rescue trucks. Cobb and Bartow are threatening to back charge Polk County for these incidents.

So once that f*ckin' hick berg raises enough money from jumpers to buy themselves a real fire truck with a big boy's ladder on it, I assume the price will go back down to normal.

Until then, just aim for trees that are on county property, and chop them down to get people out.

Like I said, only once in the past 2 years... after the once, we took matters into our own hands... I mean, who wants to see a girl hanging in a tree for a few hours on national TV?

Ummm...
Would this be a cable program? I see potential... :D ;)

This kind of shit really pisses me off.. Being a nationally registered EMT-I i've never heard one freakin thing about a special "skydiver spinal immobilization board" or "skydiving friendly roller guaze". Lets face it, on every single trauma call there is a basic line of protocol to be followed in any pre-hospital care:

1.Airway management- Maintaining a patent airway which may include positive pressure ventilations or intubation. hopefully polk county wont charge you by the breath..
2.Bleeding control- direct pressure on wound, use of pressure points and at a last resort a tourniquet.
3.shock prevention: included and not limited to IV therapy, MAST trousers, transported covered with a blanket in a trendelenburg positioning.
4. Spinal immobilization-includes the use of a plastic backboard, some straps, a little tape and some styrofoam.

Now on EVERY SINGLE emergency call on an unstable trauma patient you have 10 minutes from the time you put on your gloves to the time you turn a wheel to the hospital (national registry standards) which means if its a 20 min ride to the hospital you're taking your normal 400+/- ambulance ride to an 1100 thrill ride turning your prehospital experience into 36 dollars a freakin minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is not a damn thing special about skydiving accidents and its not right to be singled out...have you thought about how rich they'd be if they added a 750 dollar surcharge to every call involving some redneck who got drunk and beat his wife?? that place would look like beverly hills!!! Polk county wouldnt be anything without skydiving and this is just a slap in the face...nuff said

gimme some duct tape needles and some 2by 6's and i'll be your EMS for free ;)

If you read the article closely is says

It will be added to calls not involving transportation to a medical facility.

If you have to be taken to the hospital its not being charged, but if you call the ambulence and it turns out to be a non transport call you'll be getting charged. I guess the way to look at it is to see what your insurance will pay for. If you have insurance it might be cheaper to call and be transported to a hospital even if its not needed vs calling and getting charged for them to say "Yep, broken leg... want to ride along or your buddies can tke you to the ER"

Tree rescues will be charged also and I assume if any calls about "Skydiver landing under a broken parachute" result in someone being dispatched they might be charged too.

Fight this at the next council meeting if it really means that much to locals.

What will be more interesting is how they decide to bill it back. They can either sit around and collect all the needed insurance information and billing info on site, or they can send a bill directly to the DZ later. Its a hell of a lot easier to bill a company then it is a person so look for the DZ to be eating the bills on minor injuries.

From my understanding of EMS billing, at least in the urban areas of the Northeast, $750.00 is pretty close to standard for an average ambulance call by a paid service. The last time I needed an ambulance for a car wreck (BLS only) in a rural area the charge to my insurance was just over $600.00. Check with your local EMS provider and see what their common charges are for BLS or ALS services with transport.

The issue here isn't so much the actual charge, as the decision to apply that cost to a specific class of users, or a specific location. That seems discriminatory to me. Keep in mind too that we really only have a single perspective, as written by a reporter covering a local government meeting.
