I was thinking maybe a thread like this might be useful to collate some nice advice... by which I don't mean the obvious things you have to do (like "pull") but things like:

Nature has no straight lines, so anything that looks like a straight line on the ground is probably dangerous. (Saved me from going into a barb-wire fence on an out landing.)

Too true!! My *original* JFC back 10 years ago had rigs with B-12 snaps. One guy managed to misroute the legstraps and ended up with a DBU (*DOUBLE* ball under). Needless to say, he was NOT a happy camper when he reached the ground.

His next jump, had a mal and had to cut away. He quit jumping for the day at that point...

As for quotes, I like the one that Tonto has as a sigline:

on my first static line walking to the cessna I was .. (adjusting so to speak) the JM saw stopped me and the other male student and said "The dropzone is the one place where it is totally fine to adjust your shit because the first time you don't may be the last time you need to"

If you are going to land under a ball of shit, make sure it is as big a ball of shit as possible.

If you have something funky going on with your canopy(s), but they will land you safely/survivably - leave them alone!

The person who gets you will be the person you don't see. So if you don't see anything bad happening, look harder.

Assume that everyone is out to get you.

There is no limit to how stupid someone can be.

No matter what else you are doing, look down once in a while.
