Deployed with my helmet in hand!

Just thought I'd post my weird story from this weekend, I'm wondering if anyone else has had to do this.........

My chin cup came undone on my Bonehead Optik (old model latches apparently) relatively early in the jump. Went straight to my back in attempt to re-fasten it. Couldn't get it. Went to my belly. Couldn't get it. Went back to my sit, then back to my back again. Still unlatched.

At 4,500 I flipped over, grabbed the chin cup with my left hand and pulled it off my head, then held my breath and pulled the pilot chute.

So I saved my camera and helmet, put it back on my head and continued with the canopy ride.

I know it sounds like I misrouted the chin cup but it's impossible to do. And it was TIGHT as I exited the plane. The video doesn't show my friend hitting me either. Weird shit.
So I didn't jump that helmet the rest of the day, and I'm getting the chin cup replaced with an up to date one ASAP.

Anyone have a similiar story, or imput, or whatever?

I don't remember who it is, but someone here posted a story how they were filming camera for a 4-way and they noticed someone's helmet was undone, so they came down took that persons helmet off and held onto it for the duration of the jump and returned it to its owner on the ground.

I think theres a video of that. If its the one I was thinking of then it was someone in the base of a big way I think.

What was your fall rate doing throughout that? Where was your friend relative to you?

Saw a video of a 4-way team lose an alti once. Flew straight up at a hell of a speed straight at the video. Camera man didn't even flinch. Then the team finished and broke off and camera guy reaches into left wing and retrieves an alti, proudly displaying his new trophy to the camera.

Also saw my friend had his goggles flip up on a 3 way sit jump. Congratulated him on maintaining perfect fall rate (balled up) with the other two flyers while he put them back on. I'd wouldn't want to freefly with him if he'd been flipping from belly to sit to his back as he tried to sort the problem.

Saw a video where the camera flyer's helmet comes off on deployment and he catches it with his feet! Couldn't believe the old guy had such good reflexes! ...right Josh?

I lost a gath fitted with a chin-cup on exit last year. Some body's foot caught the release as we rolled out the door. No camera fitted at the time but had 2 audibles.

I'm not sure why you took it off? Why didn't you put your left hand on the top of it as you reached back to pull? Anyway, congrats on keeping your head, eh helmet, and especially altitude awareness!

I know of 2 people personally that lost their optik's. One had a camera stuck to it (never found it) and the other one that didn't anything attached...the farmer brought it back.

That happened a few weeks ago at SD Aggieland, during some relocated 4-way scrambles (after SD Houston's Otter took a dump). Korschak (sp?) flew over to the girl that was having problems with her helmet coming undone and trying to come off, took it off her head and held on to it. He also popped back up and continued to film the 4-way until track off in which he deployed. He came back down and gave the helmet back to her. She was actually very grateful. All in all pretty good video and a great story.

Reminds me of a similar story involving an early Bonehead, open-face - camera helmet. Buddy was filming my tandem student, but never did get the chin up to latch in the doorway, so he spent the entire freefall holding the helmet onto his head with one hand.
The finalproduct was good enough to sell.

I took it off cause I would have lost it, and having it in my hand made more sense at the time... atleast that way I KNEW I had a hold of it.

As far as fall rate goes, we weren't too far from each other. I caught him on video a few times... but he definitely knew what was going on and stayed aware as well.

The story of the camera guy coming in to take the helmet is priceless!!! Great work

I recently got out on a 2-way and noticed the other guy's chin strap had slipped up under his nose, so I grabbed the strap and tried to get it under his chin.

This was a lot more difficult than I expected, so I had to use my thumb as leverage against his chin. Anyway after a few seconds of trying I managed to get it past his mouth and under his chin and we proceeded as planned.

We got down and I mentioned it to the other jumper, he had no idea his chin strap had slipped under his nose, saying "I thought you were taking some wierd grip on me or something" . No shit!

I have deployed with a shoein my hand before. I pulled a buddies shoe off in a poorly done sit train. Holding the shoe cupped in my rt hand, I still thought I had a grip on him. I flew a sit holding the shoe, switched hands to deploy(touched the shoe to my head) and handed it back to him in the landing area

On a similar note last year some time I did a 4 way horny gorilla that went to shit and one of the guys lost one of his shoes at about 10k. He was really pissed off that he lost his shoe and actually started argueing with the rest of us when we landed about it.

I went and packed and mentioned that he lost his shoe and someone says "I saw something fall over there" and points about 20m away. I laughed but decided to check it out, and low and behold there was his shoe, right next to the peas! Nice spot! He couldnt believe it when I handed him his shoe, and he stopped bitching at us about it pretty quickly.
