Randy_H 0 #9 April 23, 2005 Posted 4/23/2005 11:31:00 AM Skydiving Accident Skydiver Loses Legs to Plane in DeLand Accident There was a freak accident in the skies over Volusia County today. A plane collided with a parachuter in mid-air this morning near the DeLand airport. Police say that Albert Wing III was parachuting about 600 feet above ground when the plane he had just jumped out of clipped him with a wing. He lost both of his legs, but he still landed and was concious. He's been rushed to Halifax Regional Medical Center hospital in stable condition. William Buchmann was piloting the plane for SkyDive DeLand, who says he has 40 years of experience. FAA is investigating in incident. For more information tune to Central Florida News 13. RhondaLea 4 #24 April 23, 2005 If you go back and read this thread, you will see that the pilot has been flying for many years. I would like to add that ALL of the pilots in DeLand are some of the finest jump pilots anywhere in the world--years of experience and all of them skydivers as well. This particular pilot is also a long-time friend of Gus. Please be mindful of the fact that the old-timers at DeLand have been through a lot together. At 600 feet, the Otter was over the runway. And at 600 feet, Gus was over the runway. Something went terribly wrong today, and it would be best for everyone if we could all just wait for more information to figure it out before we speculate about things that could hurt those who are left behind. Please. rl Edited to add: I made a stupid newbie mistake here. "600 feet" is from the press release, but that should not be taken as factual. I have heard other reports that it was not 600 feet.If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
