Please post malfunction pics.

Recommended Posts

I'm very new, know nothing and need to gain knowledge of malfunctions. I always hear "line-twist", "line over" and so on, but have no idea what they would look like above my shoulder. If anyone has any examples pics of malfunctions or knows anywhere I could go to get so, would be much appreciated.

Not at a dropzone yet. Want to learn before I get there.

3 jumps in your profile?

We had illustrations of mals and abnormalities in our FJC as well as reprinted in our training manual.

They'd likely be above your head as opposed to over your shoulder.

Remember sitting on a swing as a kid and twisting up the ropes? Just like that.

You'll almost certainly be shown pictures of malfunctions during your first jump course, so don't sweat it.

There are some good pictures (and great information) in a couple of books about skydiving available at many bookstores, and on-line retailers like Amazon.com.

First, check out Parachuting: The Skydivers Handbook by Poynter and Turoff, then pick up The Skydivers Survival Guide by Antebi and Emerson. Both books will help your out. My book, JUMP! Skydiving Made Fun and Easy has some great information too, but is geared more to whuffos (those who haven't jumped at all, or have just a couple of skydives). JUMP! is also a great read for experienced skydivers who are looking for ways to answer questions from whuffo friends and family.

ok. line twists have been described above, the other mals - i think as a student all you need to know is if you don't have a nice open perfect square above your head that's floating straight, you have a problem. but you'll learn on your FJC. go do it!!

Not really. Each malfunction should be dealt with in different ways. Just because your canopy doesn't open perfectly doesn't mean that you should jump straight to your emergency procedures.

Smeger, I'm sure you'll learn all you need to know, and probably more, during your first jump course, so don't get carried away trying to learn stuff that they'll teach you then!

I can understand your desire to know everything before you commit to anything, but the internet is not the place to pick up knowledge for your first jump. An FJC is. Trying to learn everything over the web and then have to re-learn (probably) something slightly different will just get you confused. On your first jump you will have enough on your mind. You do not need the added confusion of a thousand different opinions on (for example) the art of flaring your canopy.

Oh and btw, I am quite confident you will be shown the pictures you asked for with thorough explanations from competent instructors.

yup - i've already ridden down a less-than-perfect square :P... but as absolute newbies we're taught to follow the when in doubt whip it out rule for anything less than a perfect square... the point was though same as yours - FJC will reveal all

Thanks a lot for the advice people, much appreciated. I hear what your saying and agree that it is best if I just wait for my AFF course.

I wanted to learn as much about the bad things as possible before I start, so I could fully understand the risks I'm taking and at least attempt to prepare for something to go wrong. I don't want to be one of these careless people that gets over confident and just jumps right into it (no pun intended) and ends up putting themselves and others around them in unnecessary danger.

Although, as you suggested, I may be doing that already by learning too much too soon.

Thanks again, safety first.

Here's a few that I've filmed. Actually, the last one I didn't film, but wish I had.

:| Line twists...[:/] attached.

These cleared. I had pulled above 4,500, ( we were long..... on an AFF jump which I was videoing ) It took a loooong time to clear though..
. ALTITUDE consideration is a MUST....as you determine whether to clear line twists, or cutaway the main..
The relative aggressiveness or docility of your main is also a very important factor... some mains may clear themselves and some ( highly loaded elliptical for example ) may get worse.....
ask your instructors I bet they have pictures of a number of types of possible mals.

Thanks man, that was exactly what I was after. They send a shiver down my spin. Were you able to recover any of them or were they all chopped?

I think its important I study the fourth one thoroughly ;).

Thanks again everyone, safety first.

all were chopped (the backwards canopy was my own fuck up....not too good for rigging business) , and the 4th does need more study.
