homer 0 #1 April 17, 2005 I decided to have a little fun today and try some CReW with my Hornet 170 and a buddy on his Velocity 103. I almost had a top dock on him but lost my grip. We got into a rap when he tried to top dock me. I came in from behind and hit my rear risers to pop up as I was a little low. Well I didn't see him go into deep brakes as I had passed a bit under him. Next thing I know he is on top my left side and the canopy folds under and an A line rapes around his ankle. His Velocity spun around and hit me then we collided. Luckily the force of us colliding spun me and my canopy around. We separated as did my A line from around his ankle. Only to have out pilot chutes entangle and my buddy getting a line over that quickly put him into a spin. The spin untangled our pilot chutes and I was clear with a good canopy. As for my buddy he had to chop his main and trust his own reserve pack job. I followed his canopy only have it land on an island in the middle of the river. He owes a couple fisherman beer for going out and retrieving it with there boat. In all it was a good jump until the rap then if got fun. BillyVance 34 #2 April 17, 2005 There's something to be said for matching up wingloadings and canopy types better. I'm guessing your wingloadings were way off? That's a serious discrepancy in parachute size and type. Glad you all didn't get hurt. Be prepared for the flamings that may come from dedicated Crwdogs who will only jump Lightnings. I do CRW with microlines myself when jumping with my local buddies, but I try to match the wingloadings close enough, within 0.2 or 0.3, for safer jumps."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
diablopilot 2 #3 April 17, 2005 It's wrap. Highly loaded, and/or crossbraced CRW needs t be done as close to full flight as possible.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
darkvapor 0 #4 April 18, 2005 Quote Well I didn't see him go into deep brakes as I had passed a bit under him. Never try to do blind CRW. That's a lesson I learned the hard way, too. If at any time you lose sight of the other person, use a front riser to fly down and below until you regain a visual on the other person.
D22369 0 #5 April 18, 2005 Velocity 103 huh.....?........BWAAHAHAH, there can only be one person if you were at Richland Glad you guys are allright. when doing CRW with tapered/eliptical/Xbraced--shit can go wrong very fast!~ have you had a wrap before? see ya out there soon. What the hell are you thinking If you are really wanting to get into CReW, drop me a PM, I have a Lightning that has been sitting in my closet that I'm not getting to use enough.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. selbbub78 0 #8 April 19, 2005 Well I'm glad you had fun, but that sounds incredibly dangerous. Doing microline crew can cause lots of problems, not to mention the fact that wingloading is also a major concern. I hope you had a good briefing before you went up. Be careful doing microline crew because of the fact that you can slice yourself, if a wrap occurs that's bad enough to do so (i know of instances that this has occured). I'm relativly new to skydiving, but i'm just trying to make sure you realize some of the concerns that are important to realize while doing crew. homer 0 #10 April 19, 2005 Now that I have internet again. We were both well aware of the risks with the different canopy performances and wing loads. By no means were we being aggressive in anyway we made every move slow and with caution. We both made a move at the same time that could have been done differently. He slowed down as I popped up for him to take the dock not a good thing and I should have gone to front risers when I lost site of his feet. As a result two wrongs equals a wrap. We both knew better and now he has to buy a new free bag. If we had had Lightnings or some other CReW canopy things would have been different. There is always a higher risk when doing CReW and even more so when doing it with high performance canopies and micro lines. Will I do this again with non CReW canopies probably not anytime soon.
