loflyer 0 #27 March 30, 2005 I have to agree with some of the previous posters who stated that "anyone" can wear a closing pin necklace! It is "ONLY" jewelry. Two weeks ago, we got our new plane (PAC 750) at Skydive Taft! And we have a new pilot also.. Her name is Connie & she is awesome! She is fairly new to the skydiving world & she so wants to learn everything their is to learn about this awesome sport... She asked me about my closing-pin necklace & asked if she could wear one?? I told her, "Of Course".. I am going to surprise her this week end with one!!!
GTAVercetti 0 #28 March 30, 2005 QuoteI think this whole "who should / shouldn't be allowed to wear closing pin jewelry" thing could be solved by just etching some things into the pins. There would be "WHUFFO" pins, "STUDENT" pins, and a number of graduate-level pins - for examples "HUMBLE A", "MEATBOMB", and "SKYGOD". Personally, I stayed away from pins because they were too popular / cool / trendy for my tastes. (My jump buddies can correlate this to my jumpsuit and helmet styles.) Not wearing something simply cause it is popular seems like a silly idea to me. Much like camelot. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. foxyroxtail 0 #29 March 30, 2005 I call mine a "release pin". My now-hubby had it made for me as a divorce present. Out of my first marriage's wedding bands! Not a Faux Pas on your part - just upitty rudeness by those others who think they are better than you 'cuz they (maybe) have more jumps. Just remember, you may be that jumper one day, and don't repeat the cycle when you meet a new jumper. ________________________________________

RogerRamjet 0 #32 March 30, 2005 Quote BTW any "tradition" about closing pins would have to be less than about 12 to 15 years old, since they didn't exist before then. Not long enough for a tradition for us old farts. Hmmm, I'm an "old fart" and saw my first closing pin in 1977 and a curved closing pin in 1978/79. Maybe you're aging slower than me? It all seems to find it's way into accessories one way or the other. Remember Koch release belt buckles, three ring belt buckles, etc.? Never gave any thought to wearing one as jewelry though and certainly wouldn't wear any while jumping... ----------------------- Roger "Ramjet" Clark FB# 271, SCR 3245, SCS 1519
councilman24 37 #33 March 30, 2005 I was reffering to the nice polished stainless ones at 1990 or what ever. There were all sorts of welded wire, stamped with square edges, plated with flaking plating etc curved pins. These were too ugly to make jewerly out of. That showed up about 1980 or so. There were still lots of rigs with straight pins and bungee bridles using a bight of the bridle in 80-82.I'm old for my age. Gee, I wish I still had my first rig complete with 4-pin ripcord and belly-wart reserve, shot and a half capewells, etc. Later, I got really streamlined and modern with the addition of a Pop-Top reserve. Then one day I visited Deland and was introduced to a young (then and clean shaven too!) man who was about to change the sport with his new Wonderhog. I was stunned, wedge shaped, loop closers for the reserve with plastic ripcords, wrap-around pilot chute on the outside of the container also secured with a plastic ripcord. He said, "you want to build these for me?" I moved to Miami the following weekend to build the first 100+ Wonderhogs. Had my first (and only) cutaway with one (lineover on a 28' round) before we changed to metal reserve ripcord and hand-deploy. No pins though, just a loop of the bridle securing the container since the container was made to fit the canopy sizes of the time ... Pins came much later when people decided to stuff more canopy into less container. I suppose with free-fly and such, it was inevitable though. windcatcher 0 #39 March 31, 2005 first off, shame on people for telling you that! My freeflyer boyfriend gave me a closing pin necklace for my birthday, when all I had down was 2 static line jumps. I knew I would love skydiving, yet I couldn't afford to make anymore jumps... People need to realize, there are those of us, who love the sport just as much as they do, yet can't afford to jump as often. Look at my profile, I only have 38 jumps in 4 YEARS--does that mean I shouldn't be a skydiver because it's taken me that long, to have enough money, to get licensed finally? no! Now I am able to jump enough to stay current, but back when I first started I couldn't afford to finish training, yet I knew I loved skydiving. I satiated my hunger by watching Dropzone, Cutaway, Fandango, yes...even occasionally Terminal Velocity, sticking my head out the window driving down the highway, rereading my issue of Parachutist and ParaGear that I first got as a student, etc. I can understand why people would ask you about it, since you were a student and they probably didn't really classify you as a "skydiver"---but me, I've loved it from the beginning, if people asked me those questions I would be a little irritated, because they forget they too were once students and need to quit thinking they are better than a student. Then again, ask me this question again once I have a few thousand jumps and can actually fly... Sarah just have fun, ignore the skygods..you will find people who will accept you no matter how you fly or how many jumps you have Mother to the cutest little thing in the world... nael 0 #43 March 31, 2005 Wow, closing pin nazis. Some people have way too little to worry about in the world if they're concerned over who wears a closing pin. I've worn one since about 100 jumps when my boyfriend gave it to me, so its special to me for a few reasons, just like yours is to you. tdog 0 #48 March 31, 2005 Tradition??? I have been wearing a closing pin daily since my first skydive... Not a day before, not a day after... I have had two people comment on it, ever. First - a grocery check-out-clerk... "What is that?" The second person said, "Who went in?" Long story short, a friend of hers wore the pin from a rig of a friend that went in…. I told her that thankfully my pin celebrates life and freedom and my first jump, and is not a memorial to a lost friend. So, while it may be too popular or trendy for some, to me it is special, and I wear it for me, not for them....
peacefuljeffrey 0 #49 March 31, 2005 QuoteAfter I made my level 1 jump (knowing I had to stop for the season) a skydiving friend gave me a closing pin, to wear on my necklace. When I showed up at another dz to restart AFF, people asked me if I was a student, why was I wearing a closing pin? As if I had no business wearing one as a student. I replied, because I fell in love with the sport. I also wanted to be part of the 'club' of air junkees, because that was how I felt. Looking at the sky on cloudy days spotting jumpable holes, looking up on sunny days thinking "Damn I could be jumping right now"! Equating every possible wheather condition to jumpable or not? Does anyone have opinions on people that haven't graduated wearing closing pins? What are the traditions associated with it? I think that you demonstrate every right and reason to wear an insignia that says, "I am a skydiver because I have done it and I have fallen in love with it." Your attitude is what I like to see in a skydiver. If you know you are a true skydiver, that's all that matters. Blue skies, -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind...
