Designer 0 #2 March 10, 2004 Better canopy control and "Inspecting your Parachute".As a packer now I'm finding and reporting things that need rigger attention.Snagged threads, loose stitching, unusual line wear and my fav-undoing brake line twists.(I take the time to do this myself)

S49 Based on the many threads here and the misinformation out there about exit separation and the "45 degree (mis)rule", I'd say a discussion on spotting and exit separation.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
The111 1 #4 March 10, 2004 While we're on the topic of common misconceptions seen on DZ.com (and those real-life dropzones)... The fact that a constant wind does not alter the way your canopy flies. Flying into a steady headwind does not give you "more lift". You don't "dive longer" in a turn with a steady headwind. But then again, I'm not experienced enough to know if this is actually a big enough safety issue to warrant serious discussion. The misconception is wrong and is a pet peeve of mine (and one I see very frequently), but I don't know statistically if it's responsible for many incidents.www.WingsuitPhotos.com
seal_S49 0 #5 March 11, 2004 Thanks guys for sharing your thoughts. I've been asked to be involved during this event and appreciate the help with topics of value. The obvious challenge is maintaining the interest of a wide range of jumpers' experience. I plan on providing the intro topics and following with group discussion and Q&A. To anyone else reading this, I invite you to attend safety day at your local DZ. It's can be a great opportunity to see folks you've missed all winter. If you think that the topics will be too elementary (boring) for your level of experience, then you may be able to make a contribution by sharing your knowledge with newer skydivers. In your case I'd recommend dropping in the washer half of a #8 spur grommet with the spurs facing inward, smooth side flush. If you have a high amount of clearance from extensive use, that will give you something to hang onto to keep your grommet from falling out. And dude, you gotta find a better way to warm up your hot dogs before you eat them! S49

seal_S49 0 #11 March 27, 2004 Quoteunfortunatly my home dz didnt have saftey day this year. pretty fucked up huh? My favorite all-time excuse was, "If we had one, none of our lazy skydivers would show up." Of course, those skydivers were all trained by that DZ & co-incidentally never developed an interest in safety. As you acquire more experience in the sport, maybe you'll be in a position to influence (read "volunteer for") this type of activity someday. It's hard to do anything without management support though. BTW: Ours went pretty well; made me proud.
tattoojeff 0 #12 March 28, 2004 actualy i prepared a lecture on proper separation. it took me many hours to write and research. i submitted my paper to our s&ta who said i did a good job but there werent any plans to have a saftey day. im a little bitter because i feel many of our jumpers dont know about groundspeed and how upper winds affect opening separation, sad as that is. our dz uses the 45 degree method wich i feel is not the best way. lug 4 #14 March 28, 2004 Tattoojeff you need to check your Email more often. The format we are doing is one subject will be discussed weekly on Saturdays beginning this April. This is because there are too many subjects to be effectively discussed in one day, which can be overwhelming, sacrificing the level of retention. Safety is to important to be delivered in one single swoop. This seems a set up a hit and miss where some will get it and too many wont. Further the second weekend in March is too early for the beginnng of our season.Memento Mori
lug 4 #15 March 28, 2004 The topics, inaddition to the basic five recommended by the USPA are exit separation, changes in the USPA, and communicating positively the errors of someone to help them learn. The last one will is earmarked for the senior jumpers, instructors, and all who wish to attend, because yelling is unprofessional and the message is never recieved.Memento Mori
