If you can imagine a plane perpendicular to the velocity of the cars that is located where the cars impact, I think you would find both cars deforming onto the plane and the end result would be the same as one car hitting a wall that didn't move/deform. That is assuming both cars are identical and symmetrical laterally. Hmm. Ok... makes sense to me now. I need my coffee this morning.. While the distance between the two cars is closing at a speed of 120mph, each car only has the kinetic energy of a car traveling at 60mph. Upon impact, the effect upon the car will be the same, as it is coming to complete stop instantly, whether the object causing it to stop is a brick wall or a car travelling the opposite direction at an equal speed. eh... I'm giving myself a headache.
CanuckInUSA 0 #52 March 17, 2005 QuoteIt would seem to me that base jumping is safer and more controlled since you're holding the shoot in your hand. Or am I just crazy?? BASE jumping is an order of magnitude more dangerous than skydiving. In fact we like to say, BASE jumping isn't safe, but it sure can be as dangerous as you want it to be (skydiving is also similar in this regard). Both the gear in skydiving and BASE has made incredible advances in the last decade and in that regard, jumping is safer. But we humans are still finding ways to do stupid things up in the air and still killing and hurting ourselves. But for those of us who have accepted the risks, have been trained and exercise good judgement, skydiving and BASE jumping can forever be something that we enjoy doing now and in the future. The bottom line for yours truly is that I just love playing in the skies and would have it no other way. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
sammer 0 #53 March 17, 2005 Don't worry. I am an engineer working in an office full of engineers and I could only convince one out of 6 that I wasn't a dumbass. I also had a high school physics teacher that I couldn't convince. I might be wrong, but I don't think so.
