AggieDave 6 #1 March 7, 2005 Has anyone else seen these: http://www.striderknives.com/html/spknives.html If you know anything about tactical knives you know who Strider Knives is and the quality they produce. These were made for Airborne operators. Since apparently folks in skydiving are digging odd full metal hook knives from other aspects in the world, I thought they should look at these. Atleast these won't tear up their rig when used with the kydex rig provided.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." I looked - but didn't find a price list.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
AggieDave 6 #3 March 7, 2005 http://www.striderknives.com/html/price.html That's their price list, and the JB is listed at $125, but I bet you could find it for around $100-110 through one of their dealers.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." AggieDave 6 #5 March 7, 2005 Well, as it goes, Strider basically makes the best fixed edged tools you can buy...however, it is expensive.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

AggieDave 6 #7 March 7, 2005 I'm very happy with my jack the ripper knives, and they're $20-ish...I just thought this was cool for those folks with the Aerodyne/Benchmade knife that has a no holding system and sharp edges that can tear up a rig.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Can you sharpen the edge?
AggieDave 6 #10 March 7, 2005 Of course you can sharpen the edge. From Strider's FAQs: QuoteEvery Strider knife is available in any thickness, in either hollow or full bevel grind. These options are generally considered to be customizations, so talk to your local Strider representative for pricing delivery times. As for which carbon steel they're made out of, they don't say, but Strider has an unconditional lifetime guarantee. You mail it back to them and they'll fix what needs to be fixed or replace it and of course they'll resharpen it for free. As for the actual dimensions I couldn't say for sure but I believe its very close to a jack the ripper but about an inch and a half shorter. I could be wrong there.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

payback462 0 #12 March 7, 2005 QuoteWhat are the dimensions What's is made of? How long will the edge stay sharp? Can you sharpen the edge? dunno the exact specs, but its around 4.5" overall its made of S30V stainless steel, a powdered steel from Crucible pretty much the best stainless steel available (i personally think bg-42 is better, but then again, give me 1095 over that stainless stuff anyday) itll hold an edge for a long, long time (not that id wanna use a hook knife for everyday utility) as far as sharpening, its possible but would require some skill and the right tool for the job. edited to add pic

Looks like a good knife but I doubt it is any better than a 'Jack' when it comes to doing the intended job. I've lost a few Jacks over the years and was unhappy with spending $20 to replace them. I've be quite sorrowful over losing one of these babies.

Basically I thought that the folks that dig the Benchmade produce Aerodyne hook knife would dig this and this would be a better alternative for them.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Not to my tastes, but each to their own, eh Dave...I've also had a 'crossover' knife from another sport. It was a diver's 'net cutter', there are some nice alternates around if you google, most have standard replaceable blades, the one I had took scalpel blades.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. JeepDiver 0 #18 March 9, 2005 Benchmade has a few new products also. It serves the same purpose as the Model 5 for quick cutting of fibrous materials, the difference being a larger handle area for gloved hand use. Emergency personnel have been using the Rescue Hook quite regularly and wanted a version, which allowed for easy grip even with a gloved hand such as firecrew members. Features an oxygen valve wrench and brightly colored handle for visibility. Comes with snap-fit hard sheath for carry; optional carry accessories available separately. http://benchmade.com/products/product_detail.aspx?model=6+H2O
