jdfreefly 1 #29 February 24, 2005 Downside: Living near bankruptcy for the first 5 years I was in the sport. Close friends who don't jump are not as involved in my life as they used to be. Haven't gone sking since I started. The only camping I do now is at a dz. I will walk with a bit of a limp for the rest of my life and probably have arthritis in my ankle very early. Scared the hell out of my family and friends by nearly killing myself. Emotional pain over losing girlfriends I thought were "the one", although I realize now I was fortunate it ended when it did(this really belongs in the upside portion). Got to experience the wonderfull feeling of losing close friends to stupidity. Upside: I met my current boss at the dz and thanks to my current job, have been financialy stable for the past 2 years, sort of. Met some really great people and made some great friends. Met my current girlfriend at the dz and thank the stars that those previous relationships went south due to skydiving. I have seen sunsets from 13,000 feet, you just can't beat that! Things I used to get sick worrying about just don't seem that big. I smile a lot more than I used to. I have been places and seen things that I never would have without skydiving in my life. I have taken about 200 people on their first skydive, that is very special. About twice a week, I get to go out and just play. How many 30 year old men get to do that? Surviving an accident that you saw coming and thought was going to kill you gives you a whole new perspective on life. The sky giveth, and the sky taketh away! Methane Freefly - got stink? jumper03 0 #33 February 24, 2005 I've gained much more than I gave up. I don't really consider it as having 'gave up' anything though. I'm just living my life how I want to and jumping figures prominently in my life.Scars remind us that the past is real

happythoughts 0 #40 February 24, 2005 I am not sure if this qualifies as giving anything up... One Sat night, I was in a bar. Having dinner, a couple of drinks, and chatting with 2 women. "Tomorrow, I am going out to do my first skydive, a tandem." "Really? I've always wanted to do that." "Go with me." "Ok. Here is my phone number." 26, recently divorced... hmmm.... Next day... "Hello" "Hello, may I speak to xxxx?" "If you are the crazy guy that is thinking of taking my daughter skydiving, you can think again. There are plenty of ways to kill yourself. She is not going skydiving and she is not going out with you while you are. I don't want her around someone that is so irresponsible..." "Oh. Nice talking to you." NoShitThereIWas 0 #44 February 25, 2005 I gave up a zoological expedition to Belize. Yeah, it would have been about the coolest trip. PhDs, archaeologists, marine biologists, geologists and biologists from all over the world meeting in Belize to do various research together. Yep, I had the chance to go. I paid the deposit to go, then made my first skydive, then my second, then my third, then I realized I no longer had the money to go to Belize ... then my fourth skydive ... then my fifth ... I'm coming up on my 1000th here pretty soon and I still haven't been to Belize. But, I just found out there is a Boogie there once a year so ... now skydiving has given me a reason to go! And BTW, I have NO regrets about getting into skydiving. I have been in the sport 9 years now. Since I started skydiving, I have met some of the most fun people, had more fun in my life, traveled and lived in so many different and cool places, had a beautiful daughter, made amazing friends, teammates, and boyfriend, medaled at a US Nationals with an amazing group of people, etc... The list goes on. All in all I would say, It's all Good.Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

livenletfly 0 #48 February 25, 2005 good thread. the best thing ive given up is materialistic needs. skydiving taught me whats truly imortant in life!!! and its not driving an escalade with 20in dubs, tiny cellphones, and bling bling. even though 1/3 of my yearly income goes to skydiving, its the best money ive ever spent, and the only money that has bettered myself from the inside to the out. im a better person since i started jumpng. im currently getting my coach rating and hopefully aff this fall because i want to give back to a sport thats given me so much. it makes me wonder when i hear jumpers bitching about how much the've given up to skydive. do these people ever think about all they've gained? skydiving is different for each jumper. regardless of time in sport or jump #"s some get more out of our sport than others. it means more to some than others. its what makes us individuals among our common bond. in a nut shell, if your skydiving you best be loving it cuz there aint no other reason to do it. period!!!>
