Off landing.

Recommended Posts

Girlfriend and I made our first two solo jumps yesterday and had a blast. Our landing set ups really need work though, as we kept flying around the DZ (Not how we were tought). Just wanted to share my second landing as I set up way too far out and had to land off DZ near the airstrip, on asphalt. I PLF'd with no injuries, as my girlfriend landed spotless on her feet. She gets to brag for a while. Something we both noticed though, was it appeared that the other jumpers lined up farther out than they actually did. Is this a depth perception thing?

You might want to have your instructor(s) review how to properly fly a landing pattern and the correct altitudes to start your final, base, and downwind legs... Personally I wouldn't worry about where other people are starting their patterns (other than don't run into anyone) since people could be flying vastly different canopies with varying wingloads which will affect this.

You can peruse the SIM located here: http://uspa.org/publications/SIM/2005SIM/Section4CatA.htm#1d

It has plenty of information to get you on the right track regarding landins and more.

too many varibles to answer that question and not enough jumps under my belt. I have seen and always do see jumpers do toggle turns or front riser
turns at about 1000' and be on the ground in 5 or so seconds. Some of these guys just hover over the
DZ and BLAM they are on the ground (lightly on their
feet):o:o

It's not clear from your post, but it sounds like you are describing parallax.

Let's say you are 2000' above and 2000' NW of another canopy.
From your perspective, it looks like they are much further southeast than they actually are. It's an optical illusion.

You want to develop your own site picture for setting up a landing pattern and not rely on what others appear to be doing.

At this point it's best if you discuss it with instructors at your DZ, though.
