Cleaning cables

Recommended Posts

The best stuff I've found for cleaning and lubricating 3 ring cables is Silicone Spray Lubricant. We use Ace Hardware Store brand. Just spray onto a clean rag or paper towel, and wipe down the cable a few times. Only a thin invisible film should remain. A light mineral oil, such as 3-in-1 is also fine. Do this every month, or more often if you jump at a very dusty dropzone.

>And what should I twist up near the risers????

Remove the risers. See how the bottom of the riser, where the large ring sits, is sort of bent in one direction? Flex that part in the opposite direction and twist it around a bit. The objective is to keep that area flexible and not let it "take a set" in the bent position.

Ditto on the silicone . . . just make sure you wipe off the cables with a dry part of the towel - excess silicone left on the cables will attract dust & dirt through the convolutions in the cable housings. The coating on the actual cables is porous, so silicone lubricant will remain in the "pores" to be effective.

I clean/lube my cables at every repack, along with exercising the webbing on my 3-ring system. Ask any Rigger and they should be able to show you how to correctly disconnect your main, exercise the webbing, reconnect the main, and do a continuity check before packing it up again.

Oh yeah, and if you're one of those folks who jumps in a dust bowl and jumps every weekend, you may want to clean/lube your cutaway cables more often, like once a month!

I went out and found an ACE Hardware and bought the Ace Pure Silicone Lubricant Bill Booth suggested. Great stuff, only way to go.

It doesn't look like the ACE Pure Silicone Lubricant is available any longer. I went to ACE Hardware.com and all I could find was
DuPont® Performance Pure Silicone Lubricant. This should be fine, right?

As near as I can tell, yes. The big thing we're looking for is avoidance of petroleum distillates, which I believe eat nylon. This URL strongly suggests Ace Pure Silicone Lubricant fits the bill. Clicky

The clean, non-corrosive film produced by the "Pure Silicone Lubricant" is ideal for materials that may be damaged by conventional petroleum lubricants.

Of course, I can't guarantee what's actually in the can... :)
