Yeah, we're not supposed to jump through clouds in the UK either - but my home DZ is near to both factories AND the sea - damn that industrial haze and sea mist can move! :)

Aah yah, can call it clouds down here is S. Africa coz industrial haze or pollution doesn't come in cumulus nimbus or whatever!!! we can & do jump through it... sometimes it's fun but sometimes it increases the pucker factor... 'specially when 'they' proclaim it to be 500 to 1000' thick but after freefalling for 2000' & visiblity is still absolute zero... good feeling gone... I want my mommy !!! I believe our only restriction is that we can dump above or below the cloud but not in it... below this ??? The friggin' ground's below this !!! MOM !!!

I am an AFF student and on my level 3 jump I pulled and went into a very large cloud. It scared the hell out of me! [unsure]

I still did my contolability check and then remembered what my instructor had told me to do and pulled hard on the right toggle to spiral through the cloud.

It seemed like time stopped when I was inside the cloud and it took what seemed like hours to make it through. I know this is kind of off topic but I needed to share this experience. It wasn't fun and I don't think I'd like to do it again.

BTW - there was a rather large fly-in going on at Deland Airport that same day which didn't help matters and I could hear the air traffic!

Is this the standard advice to give if someone finds themselves in a cloud? It is contrary to my views and practice.

Training in Australia is to spiral slowly if you find yourself in cloud while under canopy.

That's what I was taught as well in the US. Slow right hand turn. But I have heard other US jumpers claiming that the best course of action is a hard spiral:| Quite confusing. I'll stick with the slow turn. I have a hard time believing that anything hard+low visibility=safe. But maybe I'm wrong...

Contrary to my practice too.

I like the concept of a sloooooooow spiral in breaks. The gental turn keeps each jumper in one small piece of airspace, and will hopefully prevent collisions. Going sloooow helps minimize the adverse effect of a collision, if one happens.

The other nice piece of advice is to make noise by yelling or singing, so anybody nearby can hear and avoid you. Pick a song and sing it at the top of your lungs ("...Madmen, drummers, bummers, and indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat...")

And the really best advice is to avoid clouds. That is especially true for instructors who are jumpmastering students.

With all that said, please follow the advice of your own instructor. If you think slooooow turns make more sense, then discuss it with your instructor, but if you are a student please do not follow random advice from the web.

During my AFF course I freefell through cloud, flew through cloud under canopy and opened in cloud. The first instance was a non-issue, in the second the cloud was fluffy but fairly thin, and in the latter case I went into a hard spiral turn to get out of it. I discussed it with my instructor afterwards and he recommended shallow spirals in future.

on my 19th jump i saw i was going to punch a small cloud and thought well no big deal, its small. i hit it at about 9500' and came out of it at right around 4 grand...low opening for me at that point. and to top it all off, i was jumping a brand new (first) altimeter. i was blowing throught the white, glancing at my alti every so often thinking, damn! i hope this thing is working right...;)

If you are fixing to hit a cloud right after breakoff look down your chest while you are tracking and see which way the other jumpers in your group are tracking. I do this for the first few seconds when tracking away on every jump. If you are going to pull in the cloud then be very attentive to your opening. If it opens on heading then you can continue to fly straight and hopefully will come out of the side of the cloud before the bottom. Flying a canopy down the side of a cloud is pretty cool. If you have to pull in a cloud and you open off heading and are unsure which direction to turn to be back on heading at pull time or if you are unsure where other people are then a slow spiral is best. Try not to spend too long flying around trying to get your slider colapsed and other stuff situated. In the event that the ground is not visible due to a cloud layer it's possible for a group to get out early since they don't know where they are. With a hard fast spiral it's possible to spiral down out of cloud on top of the previous group flying upwind up the line of flight trying to make it back to the DZ. I know after getting out early flying up the line of flight trying to get back is poor common sense, but poor common sense isn't all that uncommon.

Also if spiral down out of a cloud, do what brits17 said and try and look up and see the whole you made. Maybe be shaped like a canopy.

Hahaaa! And I will take full credit for the advice when he sees the parachute shaped crater in the cloud ;)

BTW, I accept your apology Brit. That was very good of you to offer it. I can only imagine how excited you were after your punching thru a cloud and seeing your pose for the first time. And I think that is cool how anxious you were to get home and share your experience with everyone. I can understand your embaressment afte posting that it was obvios after so many years in the sport that you just discovered this phenomenon. So again apology accepted and as for fun stuff for new jumpers; keep the good tips coming.

Do you really think it is better to turn while in a cloud?

Most people speed up in a turn, and when turning you might just stay in the cloud.

I was always told...and always taught to stay straight and go into half brakes to slow down.....

My reasons:
1. Half brakes reduces the potential energy in a crash.

2. You were trying to go away from other jumpers when you lost them......So why turn now? Stay the course you had.

I agree with everything else...Avoid, go slow and make noise...

Good topic.

well IMO if you fly straight you have bigger chances to cross someones flightline, whereas with a slow turn you will tend to stay in your area...
moreover if flying in a mountain area if you fly straight, you might fly into the obstacle more easily than if you spiral SLOWLY down...
