tmontana 0 #1 January 29, 2004 This may sound like a silly question, but since i've just started jumping (24 jumps), and this is something i've thought about but never heard of or seen anyone do during a jump. Is there a safety issue? Since i can't hear shit except wind when i jump would it matter if you are listening to music. not necessarily saying for me right now but when i get more experienced. Do people ever take a small MP3 player with headphones with them and listen to music during a jump?___________________________________________ "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin
Blahr 0 #2 January 29, 2004 I've thought about it, but since I cant hear an audible in freefall it probably would be a waste of time for me

benny 0 #6 January 29, 2004 I was actually thinking about this though, and it seems to me, if you get comfy with a song, maybe it could give you clues for what you're supposed to be doing during your dive. Do people ever take a small MP3 player with headphones with them and listen to music during a jump? The whole subject of communicating in the event of a canopy collision looms large in my mind. In an instant, you may need to be yelling up or down to someone, and have some idea what they are saying as well to coordinate a life-saving manuever. Just not worth a tune in my mind. It's is a little bit like closing the world off with headphones while driving a car - but you did not hear that person beeping your horn at you while they were spiriling out of control before slamming into your car. Some things, I think, deserve our full attention - and definitely believe skydiving to be high on that list - T.B. mr2mk1g 10 #13 January 29, 2004 I don't like the fact you can't heard hunder canopy. Im not into CRW or anything, but I can recall loads of jumps when I've shouted somthing to another jumper under canopy (never in "anger" mind). Just think if for any reason somone needed to call a warning to you.

riddler 0 #18 February 1, 2004 QuoteHow about just listening during the ride up? Think about all the good things you'll miss if you wear a headphone: 1. The pilot's report on ground winds 2. Information from other jumpers - exit order, who's doing what, anyone pulling high?, etc. 3. Information from the pilot - "plane's on fire, everyone out!" Hearing isn't our best sense on the plane because of the noise, but it makes sense to keep all available senses open in case we need them. Well, except for the smell sense, I guess. I would gladly wear a Sony Smell-man (if one existed) to tune out the jet-fuel and fart smells.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

kitof1976 0 #22 February 2, 2004 My thought exactly... what's next when the music is not enough to make the skydive fun... Pop some acid to make it really groovy .(smart ass comment) No music for me... I need to hear myself think. Not to mention that I got used to the sound that my canopy/gear makes on deployment, flying around ect. Sounds gives me valuable info as to if things are normal. Newbie 0 #24 February 4, 2004 QuoteMy thought exactly... what's next when the music is not enough to make the skydive fun... Pop some acid to make it really groovy . you do that too huh? I thought i was the only one. j/k - anyone thought about using an MP3 cutter to cut songs to like 45-50 secs so that they act as an audible? i.e. they finish, you are at break off, off you go, timeout/pro track/dytter goes off at 3000/2500 whatever - pull. Sure that's not a long time, but if you want to hear music you can, and it acts as another audible. Obviously you have the issues of starting the tune as you're meant to be spotting/watching the last group, but that's another issue i won't even get into.
