Pete Draper,

Just because my life plan is written on the back of a Hooter's Napkin, it's still a life plan.... right?

Most jumpers I know won't ship UPS as they feel that UPS will lose more than Fed Ex, though that has not been my experience.

Me, I always use Fed EX. Insure for full value, it is a little more expensive shipping that way, but well worth it if the rig is damaged or lost.

Keep in mind also that Fed EX generally will not leave the package at a door and drive off unless you ask for a NSR, No Signature Require delivery. Personally I would make sure it is signed for.

Definitely use a new box. I recommend you use 3M packaging tape, it seems to hold the best, and some sort of packing material wouldn't hurt. As far as who to ship through, they all have a tendency to damage packages. The Postal Service uses the same planes as Fed-Ex for Priority and Express Mail. I don't think there is much of a price difference between Fed-Ex and the USPS.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid!

I've never shipped a rig-but I am a part-time watchmaker and ship many VERY expensive watches. The ONLY way to ship is United States Postal Service Registered Mail. It's not the fastest but most certaintly the most secure and least likely to receive damage. Priority Mail is also very good and now trackable. I wouldn't ship a cannon ball UPS.Fed-ex isn't very far behind. PS: You'll play hell trying to collect on a claim through UPS if one is made--don't even ask....

Personally I would never ship anything valuable via the postal service, they have a very primative tracking system, if any, compared to UPS. I've heard to many stories of packages getting lost in the postal system and they have no idea where in the process it got lost. UPS logs a package at everything single stop it makes whether by truck or plane.

USPS is around a 8-12 month wait to get an insurance claim paid if anything happens.

FedEx or Airborne is about as good as one can get.

UPS is my #1 pick. Fed Ex Saver farms out their ground deliveries, and can be inconsistant in rural areas. They are great for Air Shipments though.

Insurance and consistancy with UPS has always worked for me...

....knocking wood as I package yet another rig for shipment!
