Jumping with rain

Recommended Posts

In my country it is not difficult to see the weather changes almost instantly. From big blue to huge dark clouds takes just few minutes. What do you do, if you are at 13.000 and the clouds at 4.500? It is not raining yet, but who knows? And if you jump and you pull at 3.000 and then, the rain start to fall? (For example, this weekend, the strength of the rain was too big, that ice blocks was falling. Its summer here and it was a tropical rain). And the canopy? They can fly under strong rain (or ice blocks)?

I can't think of any reason the canopy wouldn't perform properly in rain.... Ice blocks? Hmmm. Hail? There really should be enough pressurisation to not have to worry.

Shitty situation though... to be under canopy in a hailstrom :S[:/]

Never experienced it... I've heard of people being caught in hail in free fall (OW!), so I guess they've had to deal with it under canopy.

Btw, the general concencus for hail in freefall is to turn onto you back and let the rig take the punishment.

i jumped in sweden once and i got into pretty heavy rain. i sucked it down lower then usual trying to minimize canopy time but it didn't really help - in few seconds under the canopy i was soaked completely. i had to pour water out of canopy's cells on the ground, otherwise it was fine. canopy flew as usuall, i didn't really noticed any difference. since it was competition, i had to pack and jump again (rain was gone in 5 minutes after i landed !) and my rig was super heavy. which i think helped me to get my best result on that jump, since weight is good for speed skydiving :)

Jumping in the rain is not too much of a problem, other then it plain hurts...but do remember that a wet canopy: main/ reserve will take more time to open..It should be ok from exit to opening but if the systems are already wet then,....... SO saying this... if you do jump and the reserve does get wet..... besure to have it opened and dried before jumping it.... the next week.......

Thank You,

Oi meu, tudo bom?
Does the pilot have radio communication with the airport below? They should be clueing him in on changes in weather....If the clouds look that bad from above, come down with the plane....It is not fun going through rain and hail!

Feliz Natal!

Tudo tranquilo!

When the last load came with some students inside (they didn´t jump, cause the CB clouds were at 4.000 and they had to pull at 5.000), the track jump we were planing to do, was canceled. The rain start to fall few minutes later, and then came the ice blocks. I jumped with little rain before but I would be scared to fly in the middle of that storm....

Um ótimo 2004 para você e bons saltos !
