Elevation and Performance

Recommended Posts

I am going to be jumping a several different elevations over the X-break and was wondering how much the change in elevation from my home drop zone will affect the flight characteristics of my canopy.
I know that higer elevatioin will be faster than lower....just looking for more quantitative answer. The elevation at my home DZ is approximately 4300MSL (fast air)B|
Thanks
Jim

This post covers density altitude. The canopy performance excerpt relevant to your question is "To create the same amount of lift, for each 1000 ft increase in density-altitude the true airspeed will increase by 2 percent." The post in that link also gives some numbers for computing density altitude, so you won't have to just guess.

Further details about performance are not easily quantifiable.

I think his canopy will be flying slower.

You are be correct.

Unless, in the rare chance (which I doubt), he might be jumping somewhere higher than 4300 above sea level. I don't think there's too many places that you can do that at.

Anyone know which DZ has the highest field elevation?

A few in Colorado, but I wouldn't want to jump there right now. Brrrrr

It was in the 60s yesterday and 50s today. I left my fleece on the ground and just wore a short sleeve T-shirt under my jump suit.

Of course we still have the biggest problem with West Nile, the flu has killed a few people, and the nice weather isn't enough to make you move here.
