NZL60 0 #1 December 24, 2003 Howdy all... Was listening in on a discussion at my dz about the military experimenting with vacuum packed parachutes.. Anybody know anything about this? Can't find anything on the web about it. Happy holidays all
mjosparky 4 #2 December 24, 2003 It is called the Thin Pack or Dura Pack. There 3 configurations using the same canopy. It was designed by Simula out of Tempe AZ. and is being manufactured by SEI. The canopy is a 26' con. using a slider. The aircrew version was put in service for awhile but pulled about a year ago. The other 2 versions are for the P3 Orion and the E2-C aircraft. I was involved in the testing, approx. 200 drops and made the live jumps for TSO cert.My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Happy holidays all wow ive never heard that one before.. can they be re-used after pull, wouldnt it be quite expensive to do the vacumm packing after each jump? also.. does it require special materials for the container? Yes it is very expensive, but remember they are for the military. At present they have a 5 year repack cycle and they are shooting for 27 years. They are emergency egress systems, if used they are throw aways. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

CrazyDave 0 #10 February 3, 2004 i guess... those military boys got all the funding they want. what sort of people r using these things? i know u say emergancy egress systems, but does it open in the way a regular chute opens.?

The one I am jumping in the pictures was meant for the civilian market but that fell through. The placed a bunch of them in service aboard Navy A/C as aircrew rigs but have sense pull them off the planes. The other two versions, E2-C and P3 Orion, have yet to be certified. The aircrew/civilian system opens via a ripcord, left side. The other 2 versions have a drouge, deployed manually and an AAD activated canopy deployment at 14,000. The is a manual override on this. The systems suck so will probably nerver be put in service. imo SparkyMy idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
