quade 4 #1 July 28, 2003 http://www.nbc4.tv/news/2363158/detail.html Quote Wind Tunnel Offers Freefall Experience Facility Will Help Students Master Skills PERRIS, Calif. -- A wind tunnel at the Perris Valley Skydiving center will let experts practice and novices experience freefall without the plunge. By fall, skydivers won't need a plane at the sprawling center, which averages 100,000 jumps a year. Instead, they can flutter in a 96-foot-tall steel wind tunnel. It will be the only wind tunnel at a U.S. drop zone, a bonus for skydiving professionals and students who need hours of freefall experience to master the craft. Perris Valley Skydiving hasn't set the cost for using the simulator. A similar facility in Orlando, Fla., charges $38.50 for adults and $33.50 for children for training, gear and two "dives." Actual skydives for experienced jumpers at Perris are $16 from 12,500 feet on a weekday and $20 from 12,500 feet on a weekend. Construction began this month. quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

katecooper 0 #3 July 28, 2003 There was an article in todays (28 July) LA Times today also. Front page blurb "Teaser headline witha a See B1" 2nd section major article going 2 pages with photos. Great press, albeit with the seemingly mandatory rundown of "incdidents" at Perris in the last few years. Can't wait! Tunnel Time! kate

SKYWHUFFO 1 #5 July 28, 2003 WRONG INFO! This is the second active windtunnel on a dropzone. Skydivegreensburg in indiana opend theirs at the beginning of the season. Granted it's different in construction, but it gives my the same flytime without going to Tenn, Orlando, or CA. If you are in the midwest you gotta check it out good tunnel thats priced less than the big three tunnels. blue skies!
quade 4 #6 July 28, 2003 Oh, I'm fully aware on this issue. It's difficult to know if that was poor reportage or simply slow on the uptake because of dated press releases. As I recall, the tunnel at Perris began construction about the same time that the tunnel in Skydive Greensburg made itself known. So, the press releases for Perris may be a little dated. I'm almost positive there was no intentional deception - simply a mistake. And just so there are no further mistakes . . . at least here; http://skydivegreensburg.com/windtunnel.htm http://skydiveperris.com/tunnel/tunnel.asp We can let people judge for themselves which may or may not suit their needs better.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
SKYWHUFFO 1 #7 July 28, 2003 QUADE, THAT'S COOL! I just wanted to let the jumpers in the midwest know they don't have to drive forever for the tunnel experience. I can attest the tunnel time does help your airtime!
quade 4 #8 July 28, 2003 Well, any tunnel training probably needs to figure in the cost of the tunnel time, coaching, tranportation, food and lodging vs. what is available locally. Depending on what you want to do and what level you're at, you may be better off financially traveling to a location such as Orlando (or soon Perris) or just doing a few more jumps at the dz in your own hometown. It's not just about the tunnel time anyway -- it's also about the coaching and connections you make. Clearly having a tunnel at your home dz makes training in it far more financially attractive just from a tranportation, food and lodging perspective. The tunnel at Orlando (and soon Perris) has world class coaching that might not be available at other tunnels though. Just something additional to consider.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
lummy 4 #9 July 29, 2003 as a side note, the manager for the Perris windtunnel does frequent here quite a bit. I'm sure she'd be happy to answer any questions you may have by posting them in the forums. I think she's on vacation for the next few weeks tho...I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. SKYWHUFFO 1 #10 July 29, 2003 QUADE, I agree with everything you said especially the coaching. That brings a good point, John Suiter of bodyflight.net and of flyaway indoor tunnel in Tenn and who also won the windtunnel competition at theWFFC last year is up at least one weekend a month to help coach and teach at Greensburg. There are not a lot out there much better than John. This is valueable to learn then have time to practice. I am not saying don't go to the other tunnels or putting them down. Anything that betters the sport I cheer, my point was as i said earlier to let others know especially in the midwest that it's here and running since it's not in a major market such as LA or Orlando to get the press coverage. blue skies my friend! PhreeZone 20 #13 July 29, 2003 Have they got the wind speeds high enough to lift people in skin tight RW suits in the Greensburg tunnel yet? Nice thing about the Orlando and soon to be Perris Tunnel is they run them all night Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

SKYWHUFFO 1 #17 July 29, 2003 PHEEZONE, YES THEY CHANGE A COMPONET ON THE ENGINE 2 OR 3 WEEKS AGO AND NOW RW SUITS WORK GREAT IN IT AS WELL AS MULTI FLIERS. IT ADDED ALOT OF POWER. i AM NOT THE EXPERT WHO CAN TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT RODGER DID BUT AS A FLIER I KNOW IT MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN TOTAL AIRFLOW WHICH WAS ALREADY GOOD NOW IT IS BETTER
quade 4 #18 July 29, 2003 OK, I got an email, several actually, from Jill this morning. She is not exactly on vacation, but as is the case with most skydivers, it's difficult to tell the difference between when they're working or goofing off. According to Jill this will be a 12 foot diameter tunnel.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

skidyver11074 0 #20 July 30, 2003 Hey everyone, Yes I'm with some family, yes I'm still working albeit not onsite in Perris, and yes my trip to Orlando was GREAT. I couldn't believe that I could be any more excited about our tunnel going up. But I am! We all have a lot to look forward to with Perris SkyVenture. It's been great to receive all the tunnel time requests. WooHoo!
arlo 0 #21 July 30, 2003 john suiter is an outstanding tunnel flyer for sure...been doing it forever. but i think when quade mentioned 'world-class coaches', he was probably talking about "in the area" rw coaches like all the members of deland majik, airspeed (once a month), norgies, xl, dvg, shannon, etc. Also, the freefly coaches: swanson, rook, dave brown, juliana and fabian, joao tambor, etc. Congrats on your tunnel and the recent upgrade, BTW. i can't wait for our higher-speed upgrade in september. i know how much i love having mine so close, you guys have to be diggin' it up there. arlo

Bodyflight.Net 0 #23 January 24, 2004 Hi Arlo, Well, as you probably already know, John is available for coaching 'in the area'. We are only located an hour from Orlando. Also, Joao, Julia & Fabian are great coaches, we love working with them for sure! If you want time with John, you can contact us direct or ask any of those guys, they'll set you up with him. oh, forever, means that John helped to build the first vertical wind tunnel in the US over 20 years ago and hasn't stopped since. You can read more about his 'qualifications' on any of our websites...
