Adriandavies 0 #1 January 5, 2004 I went jumping at the weekend after I hadn't jumped for a month. After I arrived I had a niggling feeling that last time I packed I hadn't pulled the slider out before rolling the tail. I mentioned this to some mates and basically the consensus was 'it will still open so jump it!' I jumped, I pulled, I went oh f**k as my nuts almost started their own freefall independant of me. So there you go...I hadn't pulled the slider out and now know that it does have a huge effect on slowing down the opening. Next time I have a niggling feeling that I may not have done something I'm going to re pack before I jump. BTW it is a Sabre 150.

ZoneRat 0 #3 January 5, 2004 oh man... well... your friends were right... it opened. Friend of mine was grounded for well over a month when his sabre spanked him like that. Tore some connective tissue around his ribs. He didn't mention his nuts though... try not to jump over any hurdles for a while...“There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophies.”

happythoughts 0 #5 January 5, 2004 I have over 1300 jumps on a Sabre, original not new version. Always pack for a slow opening. Never dump in a track. Good body position. Fly your body through the opening. If you dump in a track, you get the same result except that it may throw you into line twists also.
Adriandavies 0 #6 January 5, 2004 It normally opens slowly and smoothly. I have had one or two hard ones but I am sure they were down to my pack job rather than body position. I'm always willing to listen and learn more so have you got any tips for slow openings?
happythoughts 0 #7 January 5, 2004 I don't pack that often. I always suggest that people talk to a packer on their dz. They pack hundreds of canopies of any particular type. They routinely slow down, or speed up, openings for customers. They also have secret tips for certain canopies. Rolling the nose and quartering the slider are general techniques. Remember that the longer it takes to open, it has more time to turn off heading or spin.
airgord 1 #8 January 5, 2004 The Sabre head whip, that's nasty! We had a guy out her in AZ who sent his Sabre in for a new lineset and hooked it back up and PACKED it without reattaching the SLIDER, jumped it, said it was a really hard opening and took it to a packer complaining about the opening he had. The packer said no wonder it hit you, where is the slider? This is a guy with several thousand jumps and he was distracted long enough to go through at least two steps where he should have caught on to the fact that the slider was still in the box the canopy came back from PD in! The canopy was not damaged but the jumper said he felt "a little" sore.
ChileRelleno 0 #9 January 5, 2004 There are alot of little sayings applied to such situations, such as "When in doubt Whip it out!" This goes for your main as well as your reserve and could save your life. Now that you know what a good crotch rippin opening feels like, you can also relate to "If your gonna be stupid, you better be tough" Listen to the little voices........ hookitt 1 #10 January 5, 2004 I'd love to verify this. I have many slider down jumps and can't comprehend zero damage to gear or Jumper going terminal with out a slider on a Sabre. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Kris 0 #11 January 6, 2004 QuoteI'd love to verify this. I have many slider down jumps and can't comprehend zero damage to gear or Jumper going terminal with out a slider on a Sabre. How about with a fully collapsed slider? Last jump of Quincy 2000. I'm in a rush, so I just stuff the canopy into the bag, throw my gear into the car & go. It was a masterpiece 5-minute pack job. Next weekend I go out on a FF dive at my dz with the rig, didn't even think to repack it. Broke at 4500, deployed at 3K. The opening was even harder than the one that shredded my Stiletto a few months back. I was dazed, confused, and wasn't even high. When I finally regained my wits and a little feeling in my legs, I reached up to collapse the slider and I noticed that it already was. The canopy was a Sabre 210. I was sore for a few days, but that was about it. The harness & canopy checked out fine.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
arlo 0 #12 January 6, 2004 one thing i've learned in this sport: if you have a weird feeling about something, listen to it. "instinct" isn't just a word in the dictionary...it has some merit. i've stood down from jumps because of it before. worse thing that can happen is that you miss a load. if there's EVER a doubt about your gear, do something about it. stay safe.... :) a
ltdiver 3 #13 January 6, 2004 I have a good friend who is now a quadraplegic from a hard opening on his Sabre 150. New line set. Slider was open (not stowed) and packed correctly. He packed it, as he always did. He admitted to opening in a fast track, though. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
Adriandavies 0 #14 January 6, 2004 Jeeze, my original post was a little tongue in cheek, but I now realise that it could have had very serious consequences. As it is I have a bit of a stiff neck but I'm OK and my rig is OK. Thanks for all the comments.
wushidaoist 0 #15 January 6, 2004 I've heard that the Iranians all shoot their AKs at the jumpers under canopy. But if you make it down they will offer you some good, hot gruel.
WrongWay 0 #16 January 6, 2004 Fucking OWWWWWWWWWWW.......... Dude this is crazy all the same. I was jumping with TJ a lot at Eloy, and he jumps I believe either a Xaos 88 or 79? (sizes not for sure). Anyway, after we do a few jumps he turns to me on the plane and says "Ya know, I should prolly replace this slider when we get down. It's been ripped down the center for a while and it's beginning to hurt a little." The scary part, he was serious!! Adriandavies 0 #17 January 6, 2004 Wushidaoist...are your serious? Judging by the conscripts the Iranian army turns into cannon fodder I doubt if many could shoot straight enough to hit anything under canopy.
flyangel2 2 #18 January 6, 2004 Remember the old Unit? In order to get mine to open I had to cut a hole in the slider about the size of a truck and dump in a track. BTW, thanks for the wonderful gift while in Eloy. You rock girl.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.
