ACMESkydiver 0 #1 December 1, 2003 Apologies all, I've searched previous posts, but I can't locate the thread I was hoping to find. It was a great discussion amongst some experienced jumpers about the best way to attempt to clear a line-over. I'm young in the sport, and I pull high, so if I were to encounter a line-over, most likely I'd have altitude to at least give it one good try at clearing it before I chop...providing it wasn't a violent malfunction. I've read in previous posts not to unstow the brake lines, and to try to use the rear risers on the side of the line-over to try to clear it? -I just wish I could find the specific thread that had one of you experienced jumpers that has successfully cleared a few line-overs before. Sorry if this is an old question that all new people ask, but I like to be completely prepared...I've had one cut-away that was absolutely necessary but very smooth, and I attribute my calmness to my instructors' (plural) continual insistence on repetitive emergency procedure practice! -Thanks in advance for your advice. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. I definitely recommend leaving the brakes alone while working with the canopy. Also, I won't screw with it if I'm in more than a carving turn - if it's spinning, I go right to Plan B. The only lineover I've cleared was by grabbing BOTH of the risers on the offending side (right hand on right rear riser and left hand on right front riser) and hauling down vigorously. It just popped clear, and I had an uneventful skydive thereafter. Regardless of how high you think you open, remember to limit your attempts to clear the malfunction so that you can cut away above your hard deck if it doesn't all work out. Something you could clear on a hop and pop at 13,500 might just kill you if you persevorate starting at 3,000. Put another way, give it a couple of earnest tries, then chop if it stays mal'd. Blue skies, Winsor
