flighty 0 #1 November 25, 2003 There is a report on ski helmets in this month's consumer reports. The protection from these helmets varies greatly. It is not tested in this report, but a bad helmet can concentrate the force of an impact rather than absorb and disperse it. Imagine the exaggerated case of putting a golfball between your head and the inside of the helmet and having someone whack you over the head with a phonebook. It's going to do a lot more damage than just the phonbook alone. (Frap hats are criticized for this very problem) Add to in the possible problems with shattered faceplates, strangulation, visibility and hearing obstructions, and you have a lot to think about in choosing a helmet. Read the problems that Consumer Reports tested for and see what you think. Cindy ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? freakydiver 0 #2 November 25, 2003 I too have read a ton of material on ski helmets as I am an avid backcountry visitor. I've seen way too many tree encounters sans helmet. There are ski helmets out there that are superb in gaurding against head impacts. I'm sure just as in any product line, you will find good and bad. -- (N.DG) "If all else fails – at least try and look under control." --
