paulagc 0 #1 December 2, 2003 I'm curious about the going rate for tandem instructors at other DZs. The options are per jump, the pack job is not included, and it's DZ-owned gear. Thanks!
cpoxon 0 #2 December 2, 2003 In which country? At my dropzone the going rate is £35 (~ $60) (using club equipment, £45 (~$78) with your own gear) but then a tandem will cost you £205 (~ $350). In other words, the TI makes 17% of the jump cost. For comparison a ticket to 13,500 is £18 (~ $31). Without this information, any comparison is meaningless? It is my understanding that it is more expensive to do a tandem in the UK than it is in the US, which is more expensive than it is in New Zealand, so the pay will be proportionately less?Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

John4455 0 #4 December 2, 2003 $30. $40 if the passenger weighs more than 195 lbs. That cost is passed on to the student. How do ya like it Johnny?
AggieDave 6 #5 December 2, 2003 Quote$40 if the passenger weighs more than 195 lbs. That cost is passed on to the student. That I don't understand. I don't find heavy passengers to be a problem at all, unless they're "flow-ers" You know, they "flow around the straps." At that point they're a problem. Its the small/lightweight people that tend to be a pain in the ass to deal with. Even on landing, I don't have a problem with the bigger folks (although some TMs have said its hard for them to flare). *shrug*--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Nightingale 0 #6 December 2, 2003 I believe TIs at Perris get $30 a jump. School's gear and packjob.
nightjumps 1 #7 December 2, 2003 $30.00 for DZ gear if the DZ packers pack it. $40.00 for DZ gear if the TI packs it. $60.00 for Instructor-owned gear if the DZ packers pack it. $70.00 for Instructor-owned gear if they pack it.
PhreeZone 20 #8 December 2, 2003 $25 if I don't pack it, $35 if I do. Weight bonuses if its a TM call if I can take them or not. Being one of the smallest TM's on the DZ at 165 pounds means I can take a lot more bigger people then I want to.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
John4455 0 #9 December 2, 2003 Being a lighter weight TI as compared to some of the heavier TI's at our dropzone, you are always taking the heavier passengers, and by the time you have been doing that 8-10 times a day, thats when you can really feel the difference. I will agree that a light weight girl with no center of gravity is the hardest to control in freefall, especially when they drop their knees down, but there is a way to control that. How do ya like it Johnny?
JoeyRamone 0 #10 December 2, 2003 25-35 buck, i would say you are all under paid for the job at hand.

slotperfect 7 #12 December 2, 2003 I get paid $30 per jump, $40 if I pack the rig. I use school owned tandem rigs. I don't need more for heavier people . . . they are equitably distributed amongst the Tandem Masters on Staff such that having one or two heavier folks in a day is not physically taxing. Besides . . . I AM a bigun myself! Arrive Safely John
AggieDave 6 #13 December 2, 2003 Quoteby the time you have been doing that 8-10 times a day, thats when you can really feel the difference. The most I've done in a day is 9, I've done 8 and 9 in a day a few times, though. Haven't really had a problem with flaring, even with the large students. Then again, I'm also a pretty hard-core weight lifter. TMs, no matter what their size, should have the strength and endurance to be able to do a good handful of tandems a day without having difficulties controling students or flaring. I also believe that they should have the strength to rear-riser turn their tandem canopies before they release the toggles. You never know when you might need to do that. (Obviously you're not going to rear-riser a landing).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

jeremyneas 0 #16 December 2, 2003 I think the standard is 30 (no packing, DZ rig), everywhere i've been thats been it...for 8 years now. So it begs the question...If inflation drives up the prices of jumpers tickets and tandem tickets, why does the pay remain the same?
PhreeZone 20 #17 December 2, 2003 Jumpmasters are willing to accept it? Nothing is there to force the DZO to pay more? What are the TM's going to do? Walk out, the DZO will just replace them with other people that are willing to work for the lower rate of pay. The cheaper labor might be lower skilled too but since a TM is a TM... they all get paid the same.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
mfrese 0 #18 December 2, 2003 Re: the subject, $25-30, depending on the DZ I'm working at, and I NEVER pack the rig, these DZs have several packers working and I'd be taking money from them to pack. Also, extra money for either over 200 or over 220, again depending on the DZ. Re: Dave's post, I've never had a problem flaring either, as I try to stay in pretty good shape and do a lot of upper body stuff specifically for tandems. That being said, I still think it's fair to earn extra for heavier people. It's not really a freefall issue, it's for dealing with mals and misbehaving students in an environment where you're taking the equipment right to the TSO limits. It's also for the times I've lost skin off the top of my bald head from taking a 6'5", 240 lb guy out of the King Air door.
