whatever 0 #1 November 22, 2003 Hi. can't remember where I heard this, but it's pretty funny anyway... Apparently this military guy was taking up skydiving and on one of his first jumps (maybe his first) he cut away because the canopy was pink and he didn't want to fly a pink canopy !?! anyone else heard this and any other entertaining tales? soon to be gone
Amazon 7 #2 November 22, 2003 Hell, we have a military guy at our DZ who flies a pink canopy. He is one hell of a freeflyer, has a gorgeous wife and is one hella sexy man. He also gives back to everyone at the DZ even to the point of helping out a lot of newbies who are just learning by organizing freefly loads.. WHILE doing chemo for cancer. Talk about being secure with himself. Oh recently he had to cut it away.. it spun up on him and he nearly ended up in the River. We dont have a WHOLE lot of outs at our DZ. bodypilot1 0 #3 November 22, 2003 Quote and any other entertaining tales? Yes! I have one. After doing tandems most of the day, I was given a lady that was "just taught" the first jump course that day, and was ready for her 1st AFF single Instructor jump, since she was going through the TAF progression. The skydive was all back sliding and tracking since she had her legs on her ass on exit, and when she got the legs out signal, her legs went STRAIGHT out! So I was relieved that it was pulltime and had to pull for her. After rolling onto my back and tracking while I watched her canopy open I noticed it to be a great opening, and on heading right to the landing area. I rolled over and opened my parachute and just thought I'd look up again at her only to notice her cutting away! After landing her reserve I asked her if she was OK, and what her reason for chopping was, and her responce was, "WELL, AFTER MY PARACHUTE OPEN, I LOOKED TO SEE IF IT WAS SQUARE, AND THEN I LOOKED ON MY SIDE FOR YOU AND YOU WEREN'T THERE? SO I CUT IT AWAY THINKING SOMETHING WAS WRONG! I also seen a girl cut away a good canopy because that "thingy" (slider) came down and wouldn't go back up! Returning to the original post, we have one pink tandem main. I deliberately grab that rig when I get big, tough macho students. I enjoy messing with their minds right after opening! Hah! Hah! AndyMan 7 #5 November 22, 2003 Quote I also seen a girl cut away a good canopy because that "thingy" (slider) came down and wouldn't go back up! Yup, somebody chopped a "slider down" malfunction at Hinckley this summer, too. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
gremlin 0 #6 November 23, 2003 They must sh*t themselves when they chop the main due to this thingy coming down and then the same "problem" happens on the reserve! They must think that it is not their lucky day I'm drunk, you're drunk, lets go back to mine....
Squeak 17 #7 November 24, 2003 How the Hell does someone get out the door of a plane with a rig on and not know what a slider is. On 1st Jump courses, don't you guys have demo canopies and exploded diagrams of canopies and rig bit that are identified to students? You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing?

Dude, you're gonna have to try harder to stay with your students!! The only thing worse than a cold toilet seat is a warm toilet seat.
Antithesis 0 #9 November 24, 2003 We've had 1st timers chop their main just because they thought that it would be cool to impress their friends.. I D I O T S !! I travel the land, Work in the ocean, Play in the sky

Dude, you're gonna have to try harder to stay with your students!! Too funny! Ya, I have been working on the a technique called the "student deployment death grip", for students that think the Instructor should still be hanging onto them even after they open! I have had some success, but I am having a hard time with bloody knuckles on my left hand since my arm is now about 3 feet longer! mr2mk1g 10 #11 November 24, 2003 I was on a load with some static line students in England and watched a guy do his 3rd of 4th jump. A nice stable exit with a great, trouble free opening, not even any line twists. Next thing I see is he's cut away. I couldnt understand why as even I could see from the plane that his canopy was open and flying fine. I chat with him later while he's waiting for a debrief, I ask him what the problem had been. He says that after the canopy opened he went to look up at it to check it was big and square. There was something behind his head and he couldnt look up at the canopy. He figured it was ok, and it all felt normal but as he couldn't see the canopy to check it he thought he better cut away "just to be on the safe side". I couldn't quite grasp the logic myself... told him to talk to his instructor about it, muttered something about "well you're alive" and "its always the pilots choice" etc gave him a couple of tips about checking the length of his leg straps (under the pretext that it was always a problem for me) and left him to get talked to by his instructor. They are shown a "REAL" canopy, a diagram of a canopy, a video tape of a canopy that is opening, slow motion and real time, students landing open canopies, and all the canopy malfuctions! jb092 0 #13 November 24, 2003 I was talking students down one day. This one guy opened on a heading that had him flying away from the dz. After repeated radio calls for him to turn around I figured that the radio wasn't working. When we found him he stated the radio worked fine, but when the parachute opened he didn't want to "fuck" with it. What could possibly go wrong? It takes awhile before some of us gain faith that the canopy isn't made of tissue paper and thread. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
jb092 0 #16 November 25, 2003 There is a difference between gaining faith in the gear and having absolute fear of touching it. I do have to say it was one of the funniest things I heard a student say!!!! What could possibly go wrong?
