Strange thoughts in freefall?

Recommended Posts

I went through a phase of about 300 jumps while, in FreeFall, I wondered if my container was still on my back. Some videos actual show me feeling for my harness.

This is a bizarre question to have in your head when you are no longer inside of the plane. This is especially true considering that I always check my gear before leaving the aircraft. I haven't met anyone with similar thoughts.

..so, scary or just plain weird, give us some thing(s) that you've thought about in freefall (repetitively or not). :$

On jump 13 or so, I did a solo and was falling directly over Morgan's Pond. I pulled at 3K and the P/C was caught in my burble for about a second and a half, just enough time for me to wonder when it was going to open. I thought to myself in that second and a half:

"Well if this opens too low for it to fully inflate, at least the water will slow me down"

:S

Of course I was also thinking about pulling my "Oh Shit" handle

At my old home DZ with about 20 jumps at the time...

Jumped rented gear for about 6 jumps. Began having delays with my P/C. On the last jump I tossed the P/C and waited for opening. After a delay of about 4 seconds the main deployed. I remember thinking very slowly, "Gee, that doesn't feel right. :| hmmmmm". As I turned my head to look back for the second time, the canopy came out.

At the ground, the instructor asked me if I was cocking the P/C. I said, "What does "cocking" mean?"

Whooooooooah!!!! It has been hard for me to live that down. Lesson learned.

Now that DZ will always remember me as "Collapsible Dave". hehe :S

I usually wear weights (6-10 lbs) and so when I jump without weights everything feels really different and it feels like something is missing. Anytime I get that feeling I look to make sure that I still have my rig on. Also, my first (and only) cutaway was from a CRW entanglement. I cutaway, got stable and was belly to earth by around 6000 feet. It was the weirdest feeling to be freefalling without a main on my bag. I looked and reached back to make sure my rig hadn't come off when I cut away because it felt so different. When I was confident that I had my rig on and got tired of looking at my cut away handle in my right hand I pulled the reserve. I like my PD 143 :)

Had that feeling once or twice, altough too checking everything before going in&out of the plane... It's really weird!:S:$
Will probably happen to me again once my new container arrives, compared to that old velcro-infested vector im currently jumping...:S

Maybe it's just me who would feel this way but next jump, during opening sequence, concentrate real hard on what it would feel like if your leg straps became unfastened or suddenly broke and you fell out of your rig. I thought about that a few times during opening and it REALLY scared the shit out of me.:o:o
The older I get the less I care who I piss off.

I get some similar feelings now, with over 700 jumps.

For me its when I'm doing a sport jumps, since I don't have a sequence of things to do to get ready, like when jumping a tandem, I get fidgety and think I'm missing something (sometimes).

I get the feeling that I forgot something just as I step towards the door all the time ... I usually give a quick handles touch and I am out the door.

But Recently I had jump where while in free fall I started to wonder if on of my legstrap came undone because I couldn't really feel the strap around my legs!:S
I started to reajust the legs straps in free fall at about 4500 feet... a bad idea for a stability! I was just scared that if I was gonna pull without tightening them first I would fall out of the harness. [:/]

Do strange thoughts under canopy count?

I was once jumping an accuracy canopy with a split slider: after each opening my routine was to automatically reach up and pull the cord that split the slider in half, allowing the canopy lines to spread out further and flatten out the bottom of the canopy for more surface area.

Then one day along came a malfunction and cut-away. When the reserve chute opened, I stuck to my instinctive habit pattern and reached up to split the slider.

The only problem was, the reserve slider was solid and couldn't be split in half. My immediate thought was: "Hey! Who tampered with my rig and swapped out my slider when I wasn't looking!"

Those habits get so ingrained you still do 'em even when they don't make sense, and then automatically blame others because of it. Doh!

Wait till you dive out after an 8-way and instinctively throw the drogue 3 seconds after exit. :-)

I saw that a few years ago...there was a group of 6 of us. I was last out, and the guy in front of me was a tandem instructor....who hadn't done anything but tandems in nearly 6 months. As I followed him out, realized he was NOT diving....but just getting in a stable BTE position...and he pitched his pilot chute. :o I sailed by him close enough to see the look on his face just as he reached line stretch....and realized what he did. It took me a few seconds to figure out why he had done it.....and I spent the next 5000ft laughing so hard I couldn't concentrate on getting to the formation. Finally, when all hope was lost of me getting down to the group, I dumped(still damn near 10,000ft) and we did a bit of CReW. He still has not lived that one down.

one time my back was quite wet, and on exit, only felt the air on my back...really thought that my rig was gone... did a check with shoulder and chest strap... but the feeling was like I jumped with a tandem passenger harness

Had a couple of hard pulls on student gear with ripcord. Then had a really easy one. I had the ripcord in my hand and was looking at it thinking 'ummm, is it usually this short or has the thing broken off?'

Felt like a long time before the canopy opened right there and then :)
