How Long Did It Take For Your "A"?

Recommended Posts

I did my first tandem Apr. 26th '01, started SL (couldn't afford AFF) Apr. 30th, and graduated in Oct. I was going to college at the time, had a full time job and was Assistant Editor of the college newspaper. I was pretty busy then, and it sucked watching people graduate over a weekend, but now none of that matters anymore. As long as you're having a good time, who cares how long it takes. Cuz you're just going to look back 10 years from now, and wonder why you were even stressing about it. (BTW, I just now turned in my A, B, and C. Next week, D.) ;) Keep having fun!

I just got my A license and I just started jumping this month. I had 20 jumps and one of the instructors asked me if I wanted to get an A license and he gave me the sheet and I did it all with not too many problems. I wouldn't have gotten it unless that instructor brought it up. I don't really care, I just wanna skydive. :)

I started in May of last year. I still don't have it. For a couple of months at the beginning of this year, I was jumping fairly frequently. But, the money dried up and other portions of life had to be dealt with.

Now, I'm out of currency after 18 jumps. I won't be jumping for at least another two or three months while I get my finances in order. I'll do the recurrency jump, and hopefully will be able to get it taken care of immediately.

Hopefully, you are not as broke as I am. Those student loans really take a lot out of me...[:/]

I started a RAPS SL in june, have had a few weeks holiday and a bit of dodgy weather. Im on jump 16 and have the following to do

1.dive exit and backloops
2.track turns
3.qualification jump

If this weekend has good weather and im sober im optimistic about completing in 3/4 jumps.

I will be quite proud when i crack this coz never intended to do a 2nd jump initially!!;)

By the time I finish, it will have been about 14 months. Just wasn't able to get to the DZ often enough early on. 'sOK though, I'm starting to like repeating stages for currency :(

I still have to do my hop 'n' pops and packing, too.

Given my time again, I'd just take a week's leave of absence from work and do it in a block. Hindsight is, of course, 20/20.

I've been jumping over two years, and I do not have an A. Of course, I don't jump at a group member dz, so it does not matter.

I'll probably send my A-D in the same envelope after this weekend (I guess I better hurry before the 500 jumps thing happens).

It took me 8 months to get my A license, but without winter it would have been more like 2. I started AFF in Sept 2001 and got my A license in May 2002. Work and other obligations don't allow me to get to the dropzone as much as I'd like to. I started skydiving almost two years ago and I still only have 35 jumps. I just go when I can fit it in and when I can afford it.
Just go at your own pace. Everyone has a different pace. Just because others are able to find endless time to spend at the DZ doesn't mean you have to.

thank you all for your advice. i am like 3 jumps away now as i did 2 more coached dives tonight.

my questions now are these, especially for those without a license:

1) how do you pack without an "A"? are you simply 'checked-out' at the DZ and they know you are capable?

2) how can one without a license jump at another DZ? i have 20 jumps, finished AFF, but would like to jump at another DZ in the near future.

3) can you (formation) jump with other people without a license? my DZ is pretty much against it, unless they have at least a coach rating.

Thanks!!!!:)

I think I am definately working on a Record here..
11 Years and counting.

Started a Static Line progression 1992. Daughter was born that year and let the family talk me into putting it off.
Start again in 1997. Same problem.
Back at it again end of last year but not able to make it out to the dropzone regularly. Trying again this year. Hoping to atleast finish my last couple AFF Jumps this weekend.

I'm not sure how they handle it where you are, but here, as long as you feel confident, have someone watch you, and you are the one jumping the pack job, you can pack... but you should learn and get checked out for it...

2) how can one without a license jump at another DZ? i have 20 jumps, finished AFF, but would like to jump at another DZ in the near future.

I don't think you can without a yellow card filled out and stamped... and having that is as good as an 'A' license... you should have that almost completed by now... and you can go to an non-USPA dz... but I don't know much about them or what you need for that...

3) can you (formation) jump with other people without a license? my DZ is pretty much against it, unless they have at least a coach rating.

? I would get your A... We do the same thing, plus coaches are good to jump with in the beginning while you work on your skills.;)

Not sure how much this has helped... I noticed all my comments started with I don't think and I'm not sure... sorry,...:P

I hate to admit it but it took me over 300 jumps. Heck I never needed any stinkin license, not that I am trying to stand as the role model or anything. I think everyone should get their licenses and awards all in order the way USPA designed it to be ;). I also think everyone should read the SIM cover to cover. Heck it did me a lot of good when I finally did it all to get my D license for my rating. B|:P

Took me just under 1 year. I was a high school senior, going to Junior College 2 days a week and taking flying lessons 3 days a week. The weather in Kansas City usually gave one weekend a month or so that was what my dad and I considered jumpable during the winter and we'd only do 1 or 2 when we went out there...

it took me about 5 months to get my A. i am a student and don't exactly have a huge income, so i mainly packed parachutes to pay for my training.
believe me, if i had a fat account, i would have got my A in about 3 weeks.
word of advice: take your time. there is no hurry. make sure you feel comfortable enough to allow yourself to hold that license.
