New Rig

Recommended Posts

SHIT NO they are not hard openings.........holy crap - I can pack that baby for the nicest opening ever and I have just 200 jumps (so a newer packer). The only time I had what I thought was a "hard" opening was really just a fast opening....faster then what I am used to. My canopy has about a 1,000 snivel and a SWEET opening, just about everytime....not always on heading but that is my fault with packing and/or body position. The Sabre2 is great - sincerely!

Dreams become reality, one choice at a time...

There are quite a few good canopies out there for the beginners. Don't let this thread decide for you.

A new set up is quite the investment to start with. I'm on my third rig and have not opted for new yet. As you advance your skills you may find you want to downsize and it's easier to do if you haven't spent your childhood savings on the new stuff. We (skydivers in general) tend to look at how we look when we're young in the sport, but function and safety are still the key. I jump an older Mirage and a newer Wings. One has a Sabre 135 and the other a Stiletto 135. Both are sporting a PD reserve (143 and 126). The wings is the current home for the cypress, and none in the Mirage. Both are great rigs, and I don't have a problem if selling one or downsizing were to happen (not likely at this point) because I don't have the big bucks in them. Wait until you have enough jumps that you know you're going to stay on that set up for more than 100 jumps before spending the inheritance. As Dave brought up though, talk to your DZ people and see what it is they suggest for wing loading and gear selection. Good luck and be safe!

Don't tell me I can't! I already know that! Haven't you seen my x-rays?

Dude, look at the Mirage. The main and reserve pin protection is unsurpassed. The main flap systems will never wear out. It has a 40lb reserve spring which is stronger than most manufaturers. It is super comfortable especially the Unisyn harness and you can have one faster that any other container out there( 4 weeks!) and the primary and secondary riser covers are guaranteed for the life of the container.

What are the openings like on a Sabre2? Ive had more than 1 person say they are hard openers??

You can make ANY canopy open hard if you don't pack it right. The original Sabre was not tolerant of any packing errors, however slight(at least, mine wasn't). The Sabre2 has given me nothing but great openings. The only time I ever had an even remotely hard opening(and I would only call it brisk) was when I deployed immediately after going to my belly from a sit.

If you look at the wings container the Main Pin protection is the same as the mirage, and the reserve pin protection is the same as the Javalin. Both pretty good BTW I don't have a wings to counter the fact that skydivers tend to recommend the rig that they jump, but if I bought a container that would be it. I depend upon what fits you best though, different people prefer different rigs.

The only hard opening I've ever had on my Sabre2 was on a BM Jump when I deployed whilst still speeding forward pretty fast. Although as mentioned, try to demo the canopies!

Disclaimer: This is my opinions... you and other might (and probably do) think differently!!!
