Texas State Record Atempt 2003

Recommended Posts

Congrats to the 127 skydivers that achieved a new Texas State Big-Way record at Skydive Dallas last Sunday mornin'.

They not only built it... they held it for 14 seconds.

There were a few cuttaways & a cypress fire, but no serious injuries.

All in all, a pretty amazing thing.

congratulation on the record ! sorry to bring it up, but just for curiosity sake -
doesn't cypress fire disqualify the record ? or was it on attempts ?

I believe that's FAI world records only. State records are just something that's kept internally at USPA I guess. Don't think it would disqualify but yah, wouldn't want it to happen on the record itself. You want those nice and clean.

The cypres fire was not on the record jump... it was on the first day... the record jump was very clean, and like someone else said, held for 14 seconds...

BTW... the actual record jump was a 125-way... they went for bigger (130 or so) earlier in the event, but then backed off when things were not coming together as hoped.

As for the sequentials... those were for after the state record was in the bag... had they planned a second point on the record dive, they would have had time for it... the last two dives of the event were planned for two points each, but did not complete.

Pictures will be up soon (if I can break away from my day job to get a few posted).

The cypress fire and cuttaways were on the early attempts. The award jump was clean as a whistle.

As far as the 128 way sequential goes. My feeling is that the actual jump numbers tend to get shifted about as the attempts go on. Folk get cut or benched.

I don't know much about how these things work, but I believe you have to officially designate exactly what you're shooting for every jump as the numbers and attempts at sequentials change.

After they nailed the 127-way, they worked towards a world record 2 point sequential, but it was not to be.

Thanks for the props:) Rob did an excellent job as the main organizer. Props to all the captains,Larry Henderson, my captain, did an awsome job with our team with his super mellow demeaner. Jack Burke, Tom Jenkins, Dave Keaton, Fernando Gallegos and Dr. Mike Westbrook were all excellent captains as well! Unfortunately when it was built, although Josh Hill(www.aerialfusion.com) got excellent video footage from underneath the completed formation, his still camera went on the fritz!
The formation started off as big as 130+ on friday before the axe started falling. It was a much better feeling leaving WITH the record this year rather than without like last year when a broken plane kept us on the ground before the last attempt[:/].

I don't have all of my pics with me here at work, but thought I would post a teaser...

it is a pic of one of the formations that was close... it is actually larger than the record, but there is 1 person out...

More to come later...
