Post jump depression?

Recommended Posts

I've just spent the whole weekend jumping in Empuriabrava. Now I'm feeling v. miserable and depressed and disinterested in anything. How common is this? Does anyone know of any emprical studies which can explain why?

Is it because skydiving floods one's brain with reward chemicals giving the jumper an intense natural high, and then when one stops jumping it's like a come-down?

I'm a clinical psychologist with a good amount of experience with depression. Its not the skydiving causing the problem here, its the rest of your life outside of skydiving. It might squirt you with serotonin and dopamine, but it can't change the fact that what happens when you get back from Empuria is nowhere near as cool. If only life were that great that we could fly in the heavens every day! Answer - become and instructor

when I was there in december for christmas boogie, I really felt i needed to go back... for easter boogie i left crying... then in july i still felt depressed when i left... so i'll go there 3-4 times a year...
don't worry, be happy

I reckon this forum is a perfect example of how common it is. Most of the people who post here do so when they are at work to cheer themselves up and talk about skydiving. Our boring daily lives are only perked up by posting about skydiving!

Nah.Already got one served me well for 2 years, that's why I'm buying a new container. But I've decided to keep my nickname, cause you know how important posting status is.

My only two cases of depression in the air were caused directly by altitude hypoxia. As the plane came down to land, the drpression went away, and my ears "cleared" repeatedly like in scuba diving - likely the pilot saved bits of money by letting the cabin air pressure get too low.

When I got back from Eloy in January, I was a nasty bitch to be around for a solid week. Don't talk to me, don't even look at me, I'd take a head off! And then I'd want to bawl. I was a wreck.

So yeah, other people get it too! Even a good weekend of a few jumps is enough to get me down on Monday. My Monday morning 'vitamin' is St. John's Wort.;)
