Backwards main

that practice is extremely common and they usually weigh them down in an orderly fashion so they remember what riser goes where, but I am assuming that because it was the beginning of the season he had a buttload of repacks to do, so he got lazy or too busy to remember which one was which. Slacker.

Yea, I know what thats like..Check this out jumpers.. I was at the World Freefall Convention in 2000 and was having a Damn good time when me and a friend of mine decided to Demo some Canopys. So we happened to stumble in Aerodyne's Display tent and I said hook me up. I was gonna Demo a Diablo 120. Well, talked to the pilot and told him we wanted to open up high and play a little so he said gotta drop U guys at the race track area so other jumpers wont burn through you guys. Ok got out, checked the spot looked good exit went smooth played some, checked Alt opened by 8,000 and it was history. Opening wasnt that bad but when I looked up grabbed slider Stowed it and was going for the toggles and their aint none..I about shit...ha..ha.. boy what a trip over tons of wooded area and just couldnt get the thing to fly right so..chopped it..needless to say ...It was a trippin day..Glad my friend Dan stayed with my main I had to worry about clear landing area...whew..right in a big Ass cow pasture and cows running everywhere... thank you...my Tempo reserve..Big lesson learned check out your gear and watch them pack it correctly. No blame here except me ..just make sure main is in d-bag correctly and risors are straight to main lift web....:o........;)

i unitentionaly jumped my old sabre 150 backards.. hooked it up after a reserve repack and didn't pull it outa the dbag..... i landed it. not a big deal as it wasn't that highly loaded.. now if i did that with my safire i have now i'd be choping it...... but i know better now anyways to do a line check after i reatach it....

Just something to keep in mind, reserves can and do mal. Having been under one I tell ya it's got a butt pucker power of ten. I was real lucky and cleared the mal at about 700 feet. Just something to think about when you are about to chop a main that is ok just flying backward. Then again I'm a little nuts.

That was started at Perris in the mid 80's by a guy named Gary something. I was S&TA and signed him off for his pro rating. He did 6 of the 10 jumps with his main on backwards.

I saw a guy hook up his main backwards by accident, and he landed it off DZ. Nobody noticed it until someone said "hey, did that guy just break both his legs? I just saw him land and his knees bent the other way!"

Funniest part was that he was a rigger... I needed my reserve repack, but you can guess that I didn't go to him! :D

I did this in Utah once. I moved there and the first jump at the new dz was a malfunction. I got a repack, and the following week ended up putting the main in backwards. It flew fine (Strato Star) and I chose to keep it. Landed a bit rough because of not being able to judge the proper flair, but having jumped rounds, I knew how to do a rear PLF. My wife was watching the load from the ground, and she heard someone comment: " I don't know which to watch, the 'Dactyl or the guy with the canopy in backwards."

A hint/tip: to fly it well, grab the opposite toggle and then input will be 'normal'. A 'left' turn gives you a turn to the left and vice versa. Makes it much easier to set up your landing.

I've got the inside of my toggles labeled 'L' and 'R.' Also, any time I'm disconnecting a canopy still in the D-bag, I have two flat sticks with a rubber band around both ends to hold them together. The sticks are labeled too. You kinda make a riser sandwich with the risers going perpendicular to the sticks. It'd be really hard to mess up with either or both of those methods.
