British Skydivers....currency question.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, can anyone out there help me? I'm trying to find out after how long would an 'A' Licence holder with 30-40 jumps become uncurrent under BPA guidelines? The guy hasn't jumped since the first week in April this year. If he is uncurrent what would he have to do to become current again?

I am not 100% sure so dont take my word for it but I think its generally left to the CCi's discresion. I know one girl who had some time off then asked what she needed to do start back, I think she had to complete a tandem and a couple of jumps with an AFF instructor.

Probably best to go down to your DZ and speak with the CCi.
Hope this helps.

I'm inclined to think that 1 or 2 jumps with an instructor and then it is up to them to say your ok to go at it again. Never heard about the tandem thing, don't quite see how that could come into it? I know that the amount of time your allowed to go without jumping differs with your level of experience.

I got impression that the girl I was talking about had been away from the sport for a long time, I think the tandem thing was just to see how she would react in freefall.
I think you are right about the experience level too I have heard about some of the highly experienced guys only needing to complete a few jumps per year to stay current.

I'm not sure if these rules apply to UK DZ's, but I've recently done my AFF in Empuria.

Currency required to jump there was :-

A licence - must have jumped within 3 months, or you need to do a couple of AFF levels again. (it may have been levels 3,5 7 - not quite sure)

Below A licenece - 30 days.

From the BPA Ops Manual:

SEC 5/PAGE 2/JUN 2002
11. RESTRICTIONS FOLLOWING A LAY-OFF

Where a Student or Intermediate Parachutist has had a lay-off of two months or more, approval of the CCI must be obtained as to the type of descent to be made next.

And to answer the next question:
2. DESIGNATION OF PARACHUTISTS

[snip]
2.2. Intermediate Parachutist: Holds an FAI ‘A’ Certificate (Red) and above, but below FAI‘ B’ Certificate (Red).

Usually it is good idea to do 1 or 2 jumps every 2 months to keep current. It's better if this person go back to a DZ where he/she did AFF there. It'll be less difficult to jump again. It's depends on CCIs and instructors. They probably will go through everything with this person such as canopy control, emergency drill, deployment position etc... If this person did everything right then they're happy and probably will let him/her to do a solo jump. Maybe with an instructor to be just in case. I think he/she should contact a DZ and see what they said.

Don't worry about it too much because one of my friend is a very lowtime jumper ('A' holder and ~35 jumps) he didn't jump much he wanted to. He only do 1 or 2 jumps every 3 months and he didn't have any problem. Once he haven't jump for 6 months and no problem for him jump again as long as CCI and he are happy with emergency drill and canopy control.

I don't think she/he have / need to go through AFF again. If he/she forced to do some AFF again - go somewhere else cos they're rip this person off and so unfair!

Here (SA) he'd need to sit in on the 1st jump course again. (More than 3 months)

More than a month he'd require a refresher. Rules like that are not practical with the weather in the UK.

All depends at which Dz you will be jumping and how cofident you would feel jumping again. If you are a member at the club already and you feel confident just buy a ticket and jump, but first get in a practice harness and go thorugh your reserve drills thoroughly ( this way of doing it is against the BPA rules so it's up to you). Again depending on what DZ you are at and you do it the proper way they should make you go through all the resrve procedures, may make you repeat an AFF level 6/7 or just make you do a level 8 and hop and pop from 5 grand. The only way you will find out which will apply is go to the DZ and ask, or just phone them up. Don't go to Headcorn for this, in the past I was current and just wanted to jump but having not jumped there before it was going to cost me £90, so been un-current will cost you more.....and yes I don't like the place at all.

But like you said yourself, there's no harm in just ringing up and asking... If Headcorn is your local DZ, ask to speak to Pete (the CCI) and find out the facts before writing the place off. Most places will charge for instruction if you're uncurrent, and many (including Headcorn) will charge for club membership, so it's a good idea to get a few quotes first. No idea how you got charged £90, but I'm sure there's a story behind that one!
