PurpleBadger 0 #1 June 17, 2003 I'm just wondering what it would be like to do a tandem being a regular jumper. I can't really imagine what it would be like... lack of control, boring, exciting, $%it scary? Any views/opinions/ experience?
BenGriffiths 0 #2 June 17, 2003 I always said - I never wanted to do one - as I wanted my 1st FF to be a solo - Now I'm qualified I wouldn't mind doing one.---------- Ben G Still Sinking :-(

SkydiveMonkey 0 #4 June 17, 2003 I want to do one - just cos I haven't done one and I think I'd find it scary leaving someone else pull / cutaway if shit happens etc.____________________ Say no to subliminal messages
sunshine 2 #5 June 17, 2003 It's a very odd feeling to walk to the plane with no rig on. I've been a practice student around 7-8 times. It is scary, but at the same time it's fun. Being able to talk and laugh under canopy is cool. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug!
skymama 37 #6 June 17, 2003 I helped a friend out who was getting his tandem rating and it was kinda fun. I noticed all sorts of things in the landscape that I don't normally notice because I'm too concerned with other jumpers, my patten, etc. If you ever do see someone going for the tandem rating, offer to help, it's cool. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
PurpleBadger 0 #7 June 17, 2003 yeah, I wouldn't turn down helping someone with ratings... well, so long as they'd done a fair few before Another question now... If there was a mal on the jump, would it be your mal or the instructors... or do you share the credit? I've not had one yet and don't really want to ruin my record
jimjumper 25 #8 June 18, 2003 My wife had 1200+ jumps when I got my tandem rating and to speed up the process she was my passenger for the required first 5 tandem jumps I did. We did them in 1 day and she still hasn't let me forget it!!
darkwing 5 #9 June 18, 2003 I did two of them, to help out aspiring pals who were getting tandem rated. The first one was scary as hell, and uncomfortable. The second one was just uncomfortable. I think my tandem career is over. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
nightjumps 1 #10 June 18, 2003 The sound you heard wasn't thunder, it was me asshole slamming shut as we left the plane.

paulagc 0 #12 June 18, 2003 I did a tandem as my first jump, then another on about 997. The 997th was probably as scary as the 1st. I had just bought a new tandem rig, and having never done tandems at our little dz, I wanted to try it out. It was freaky getting on the plane without a rig. I ws nervous and felt like a student again. The TM was a friend and someone I trusted, but I'm sure I drove him crazy. I was ordering him to hook me up immediately, and he refused. He had to tell me to sit back down and stop checking if my harness was tight enough. I tried to get him not to unhook anything under canopy. We argued about when to turn in for final. I'm sure no one will ever want me as a tandem passenger again.

usedtajump 1 #14 June 18, 2003 As a Strong tandem examiner, a friend of mine wanted to get his tandem rating from me and wanted me to take him up as a tandem passenger just to see if he would like it before enrolling in the course. Well, he had all the qualifications for the rating except a cutaway and you can guess what's coming next. We had a spinning malfunction, tangled steering line IIRC, and since he needed a cut away and he had chicken handles on, I let him do the honors The older I get the less I care who I piss off. I can't really imagine what it would be like... lack of control, boring, exciting, $%it scary? Any views/opinions/ experience? I've made exactly one jump on the front side, as it was required to get my tandem rating. It scared the hell out of me. It took every bit of concentration I had to not try to take control of the freefall/deployment, I made the guy who took me "STOP IT!" when he started spiralling the canopy, and we argued about how to approach the landing area and when to turn in on final. In retrospect, I guess it was a good experience, but I have almost no interest in making another one. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" usedtajump 1 #16 June 18, 2003 I have over 200 jumps as passenger doing tandem certification courses. Not so bad once you get used to it. Also, its a lot of fun to mess with the guy in back by tumbling exits, de arching, etcThe older I get the less I care who I piss off.
