Doing a tandem

Recommended Posts

It's a very odd feeling to walk to the plane with no rig on. I've been a practice student around 7-8 times. It is scary, but at the same time it's fun. Being able to talk and laugh under canopy is cool.

I helped a friend out who was getting his tandem rating and it was kinda fun. I noticed all sorts of things in the landscape that I don't normally notice because I'm too concerned with other jumpers, my patten, etc. If you ever do see someone going for the tandem rating, offer to help, it's cool.

yeah, I wouldn't turn down helping someone with ratings... well, so long as they'd done a fair few before ;)

Another question now... If there was a mal on the jump, would it be your mal or the instructors... or do you share the credit? I've not had one yet and don't really want to ruin my record B|

I did a tandem as my first jump, then another on about 997. The 997th was probably as scary as the 1st.

I had just bought a new tandem rig, and having never done tandems at our little dz, I wanted to try it out.

It was freaky getting on the plane without a rig. I ws nervous and felt like a student again.

The TM was a friend and someone I trusted, but I'm sure I drove him crazy. I was ordering him to hook me up immediately, and he refused. He had to tell me to sit back down and stop checking if my harness was tight enough. I tried to get him not to unhook anything under canopy. We argued about when to turn in for final.

I'm sure no one will ever want me as a tandem passenger again.

As a Strong tandem examiner, a friend of mine wanted to get his tandem rating from me and wanted me to take him up as a tandem passenger just to see if he would like it before enrolling in the course. Well, he had all the qualifications for the rating except a cutaway and you can guess what's coming next. We had a spinning malfunction, tangled steering line IIRC, and since he needed a cut away and he had chicken handles on, I let him do the honors :ph34r:

I'm just wondering what it would be like to do a tandem being a regular jumper. I can't really imagine what it would be like... lack of control, boring, exciting, $%it scary?;)

Any views/opinions/ experience?

I've made exactly one jump on the front side, as it was required to get my tandem rating. It scared the hell out of me. It took every bit of concentration I had to not try to take control of the freefall/deployment, I made the guy who took me "STOP IT!" when he started spiralling the canopy, and we argued about how to approach the landing area and when to turn in on final. In retrospect, I guess it was a good experience, but I have almost no interest in making another one.

Also, its a lot of fun to mess with the guy in back by tumbling exits, de arching, etc;)

I thought you guys were spposed to do stuff like that? As part of the training... did I hear wrong?
