How Dangerous Was This?

Recommended Posts

OK, I am doing a two way out of the Cessna. He climbed out and I followed. Plan was to dock in front of each other, turn slightly right and drive forward to dock on leg straps. Then we would both start tracking and see how fast we could spin. Exit was fine and we were in front of each other. When we went to side dock we wound up circling each other to the left. Finally spun off and then tried to come back together. As we came together I glanced and we were screaming through 6000'. I figured there was not enough time to dock and start tracking, as we were going to break at 5000' anyway, so I waved bye and turned and went to track away. As I was tracking I can feel a drag on my left side and I am thinking, "Man, I hope my deployment goes ok." I looked back and dufus has a grip on my leg. We are getting to deployment altitude and he is not letting go. I start flailing around and screaming, "Let me go, let me go!!!" I realized that he could not hear me so I reached back and whacked his hand. On the ground he said that when I did that he thought that maybe he should check the altitude. I told him that that was his last chance to let me go before I deployed. I just turned away and tracked for like a second and then deployed. I get the usual snivel, snivel, turn, snivel finally open headed right for him. I make a quick 180 and look at the altitude - 2000'. That is very low for me to just be getting under canopy. I head for the dz and fly a right hand pattern so as not to fly over the runway and when I turn into the wind on final, here he is coming right at me, makes a quick turn and cuts me off trying to hit the spot for accuracy.

I was wondering what would happen if I deploy with someone holding on to me. (And hopefully make them realize they are fixing to splatter.) Or, maybe I did the right thing hitting his hand? I think though that this is someone I would avoid jumping with in the future. Comments?

Generally nothing bad; I've held on to probably 500 people as they've deployed. Unless he has his hand wrapped around your harness really well he will just fall off; no one can hold on through an opening with one hand. It's also about the best signal you can possibly give that he's getting low. It shouldn't affect your deployment much unless you're jumping a small ellptical. If you are, you may see line twist from a momentary assymetrical load.

he is a donkey, next time kick him in the face and he will get the message...then when you get down, kick him in the face again to make sure he doesn't forget...

but hey, maybe that's just me!:S

A) fuck him, dump at your predetermined altitude. He can't hang on, although he could alter your body position as you deploy. None the less, get your shit open and let him do whatever he's gonna do.

B) Hitting his hand wasted your time.

C) As I said, fuck him. Tell him he can jump with you when he develops his altitude awareness. He might want to take up bowling, otherwise. Break-off is break-off is break-off. He didn't notice your "later tater" wave either. hmmmm. Sketchy.

I am not gonna ask how many jumps either of you have. I do think you knew the answers before posting the questions, so I think you're probably heads-up. He's not. Let him know what's up and give him a wide berth for a little while.

Thanks for posting the experience.

Personally, my rule is that I have no friends below 2K. If someone could possibly find a way to hang onto me if I didn't want them to then I will deploy with them still holding on.

However, there is some risk involved in that. There is a documented case of an AFF instructor who was kicked in the head by her AFF student on deployment. It broke her neck and killed her. Granted, from what I understand, she was in the wrong place relative to the student for an AFF-I, but shit can still happen.

a) Pull
b) Pull on time
c) Pull stable
d) Pull without dumbasses grabbing you.

In that order;)

Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

He did have his hand in my harness, specifically my left leg strap. That was what worried me was maybe his fingers getting pinched between my strap and thigh. (Man that would suck coming down with someone's arm connected to you, I think I would throw it away before I got to the ground.)
He has over 200 jumps (C license I think). I have 163 (B license still :( ). We are both about 1.3 on our canopies. (Mine is square, don't know about his, don't care.)
I like the kick him in the face idea - good one. Maybe that is what I was subconsciouncly trying to do when I was flailing around.

does this statement mean that there is a possibility he is jumping a round???

Jumping a round, phbh. No, it is not round I just don't know if it is eliptical. (I know for a fact the reserve is not round either because I have seen it fly after a line over.)

PHBH is a noise, by the way. Just try to pronounce it phonetically and you will get the idea.

I love it!! Maybe a 3rd time for cutting you off!!

There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear.

First impression:

Did you know this guy?o you usually jump with him? Sounds like his head is in his... Kind of person I label as dangerous and avoid like the plague.

More impressions that are less shot from the hip may follow as I read the subsequent posts.

Depending on how 'close' he was under canopy would determine my response. If 'close' for you means 'in the same general space' I would just talk to him and let him know NOT to do any of that.

If 'close' was actually CRW distance 'close' under canopy and he cut me off on final, I would talk to him and if he didn't get it, then pull his reserve handle out of its housing.>:(

You know, I've been thinking about this for the last couple of weeks. We did talk about it when we got to the ground. No fight, we are both pretty easy going people plus I do kinda like the dude. (Get your mind out of the gutter.) The getting close under canopy was probably the most dangerous thing he did to me and it wasn't like crw distance or anything I just had to make a slight correction on final. I really just wanted some opinions about deploying with someone latched onto me and I got that. Also, I will certainly keep this in the back of my mind for the future.

You did the correct thing by slapping him. Since he did not get the message, your next signal should have involved tossing your pilotchute.
Never sacrifice altitude for his stupidity.
Don't worry about tearing off his fingers ... AFF Instructors hang onto students all the time.

As for cutting you off under canopy: tell him you will jump with him again after he pulls his head out of his rectum.
