Reserve deployment at terminal

Recommended Posts

I belive reserves are designed and packed to open withen 300 feet of deployment. If that's the case I assume the openings in case it's deployed at terminal ( bag lock etc ) are very hard, is that true or does the slight snivel make it bareable. I do understand it's better to have the reserve slam open above your head rather than be dead, but is there a possibility that a reserve opening at terminal can actually cause serious injuries.

i've heard this many times, but my experience was very different. i had a total and pulled at terminal and remember it being very soft. i'm not sure this is typical, though.

I've had 2 reserve rides from terminal. The first one was my 2nd tandem jump. I do remember being sore from that one.

My second reserve ride from terminal was about 8 months ago. It didn't hurt at all. It opened fast, but not painful. Of course i had so much adrenaline running through my body at the time. I made 2 more jumps the same day after that reserve ride.

You should think of your reserve as a real main canopy parachute. If it opens hard it may have been the pack job or poor body position. Generally speaking, there is no particular reason a reserve should open harder than a main canopy at terminal.

I had a reserve opening at terminal a little over a month ago, the opening was brisk, and my back was sore for a few days, but I didn't think it was all that hard.

I have had 5 deployments of reserves on 4 cutaways and one total at terminal. All of them were good.. clean openings.. BUT all of them were when I was younger... and about 70 pounds lighter. I also have to add that ALL of them were rounds.. 28 ft C-9, a 24' Military, and a 26' LOPO so they were not that bad. I am still waiting for my first reserve ride under a square. I guess I will see how my Raven treats me then.

14 total, 13 sub-terminal, 1 terminal. They were 'brisk'. The terminal one was a tandem bag-lock. I had packed the reserve and I roll 4 and 4 in towards the nose in the event of a tandem terminal deployment. It opened quick, but not hard.

I have heard of injuries from terminal reserve deployments. They are required to open quickly, and at terminal it's gonna hurt. The nice thing is terminal reserve rides are easily preventable.

My terminal reserve ride was years ago. From what I remember, I continued to jump that day after the malfunction. So, the opening must not have been that bad.

I must be one of the few souls left that jumps a Raven as a main. The raven is TSO'd as a reserve but they put packing tabs and a p/c attachement on it to make it 'main-able'.

Before I oversized the slider by 10% and had a slider pocket put on it, 300 ft would have been a nice opening. Even now, with well over 100 jumps on that tired main and with all the mods, I am only just learning how to pack it to make it snivel a bit (I get the occasional closed end cell!).

A RESERVE HAS LETTILE OR NO 'SNIVEL' STAGE. The snivel is, of course, that part after the snatch force and before the full inflation. If you've ever had an opening where you look up as soon as you feel the 'tug to upright' and there's already a full canopy there - THAT's a "reserve-style" openeing. It's actually not that horrible... or maybe I'm just "tough" :)
Yes, they are harder than most openings. No, they are Nothing like a line dump (out of sequence opening). I've lived through many many reserve openings (incluiding one terminal roundride, THAT was hard!) under my 'main'. A normal terminal reserve ride should NOT cause injury .. I'm sure the TSO ensures the G forces are within a reasonable spec. If you exceed the airsped or the weight limit though ... who knows. Don't go there. Your reserve is your Last Chance :o

A reserve has to open in a certain time not distance. Normal test, at 70 mph with 170 lb. the canopy must be fully open within 3 sec. of release. It must do this 12 times. Line twist test, 70 mph with 170 lb. with three line twists must be fully open within 4 sec. of release. It must do this 5 times.
