skydive photography school?

Recommended Posts

Has anybody started up a skydive photography school yet? I mean there is freefly coaching and schools and RW coaching and schools, but haven't seen any skydivephotography schools. it might be good for newer people to learn the skills that way. by the way i'm just thinking out loud, canucks question about getting free fly coaching sparked the thought.

Probably the absolute best thing you could do would be to look at the two as different subjects first and have some mastery over them separately before trying to put them together.

Community colleges frequently have photography classes for next to nothing and you can usually con somebody at your drop zone to teach you how to do basic RW, or freefly or whatever.

Then, once you've sort of got a good feeling about both subjects, log into the Photo & Video forum here -- we have a pretty good group of people that can give you some really good tips about getting started.

As for very specific stuff, we can arrange that too.

What Paul said above would be a good idea. You can also read up on movie making techniques, rules of thumb for framing, continuity, "crossing the line", how to put together a wee movie that actually starts to be watchable, etc. There are loads of movie making sites that will tell you what an establishing shot is, the difference between a pan and a zoom, what a dutch tilt is etc etc etc.....

One thing that is quite enjoyable is to watch as many videos as you can and see what works and what doesn't, similarly start browsing online libraries to see what shots impress and which ones are just another snap. The Potographer's galleries here are great for that.

Its generally accepted that you should be at least competent at flying the discipline you intend to film, before you try and film it. Sounds obvious, I know, but you'd be surprised.......

Once you combine your flying skills with a vision of the shot you want, and how to achieve it, you will find things a lot less frustrating.

I've never heard of a specific camera flying school per se, but I'm sure if you approached a respected camera flier, offered beer, and slots they will film and critique you just like any other coach....

I seem to remember seeing a poster for a freefly camera course with the babylon guys in empuria brava. I think it concentrated on producing dvd's from your skydiving videos but I cant remember too well. It starts this summer I think.
