Frodo 0 #1 May 5, 2003 There's a program called "On the edge" - "Cheating gravity" about skydiving, on the Discovery Wings channel tonite. As far as I know, it's only available on the cable channels, DirecTV and stuff, so if you have one of those, it's on at 1am Central time (2am eastern), and again tomorrow in the morning (and maybe later too). For Time Warner Cable it's channel 236. Tell what do you think of it. I still have no idea what in particular it's going to be about. Guess it's just going to be general stuff, with all the explanations - where is main, where is reserve, what equipment is used, etc. Meanwhile, why not write about what y'all have seen on TV related to skydiving/BASE, how much are you satisfied with the coverage of the sport by the general media, and anything else. Personally I'm usually not very satisfied, because they don't give too much of an effort to objectively cover the whole thing - they just need the drama, how dangerous it is, "this time the parachute saved him, but it could have been much worse...", crap like that. But the recent show "Now see this", when they showed about 6 minutes of BASE, was pretty cool.
indyz 1 #2 May 5, 2003 There was a Baywatch with skydiving once. David Hasselhoff had a double total and, after unsuccesfully attempting a Mr. Bill with a skysurfer, went into the ocean at terminal. He lived through it, of course.
caseyusa 0 #3 May 5, 2003 hey good call~ I saw that show you're talking about.. atleast i think I did. Hmmm.. maybe not, but it was allllll about BASE jumping. a really cool show is this the same thing you were talking about? I have the video (i taped as much as i could).. and that video is in a friends possesion (we had also taped the silly japanese challenge show from TNN.. hilarious!) so as soon as I get it back I'll let you know the title. love seeing the stuff on tv :) --- ** Blue Skies, Yellow Mustard. ** It's like a farmer, out-standing in his field. bch7773 0 #4 May 5, 2003 usually the media screws up as much as possible when they are talking about skydiving. I watch "Real TV" alot, its a program that shows a lot of clips of cool stuff (police chases, skydiving, car race crashes, etc). Whenever they show a skydiving clip, they always over-dramitize any problems. If someone opens with line twists, its "A POTENTIALLY DEADLY PARACHUTE MALFUNCTION!!!"oh p.s., anybody find it funny that the spell checker on a skydiving website thinks "skydiving" is misspelled? FallingILweenie 0 #5 May 5, 2003 i actually saw a real tv episode about extreme stuff, and they showed skydiving, but not anything BAD!!! They were showing people at z-hills playing with a basketball and then playing tennis with a sky-ball.
howardwhite 6 #6 May 5, 2003 O.K. it didn't show skydiving, but on Law and Order/Criminal Intent Sunday night there was a guy who the cop diagnosed as having "reduced fear factor" or some such. He was a skydiver. He said, approximately, "I had a parachute pack fail at 15,000 feet but I opened it with a pen knife with 1,000 feet to spare." He was a suspect because he was considered psychotic. HW

Hmm. I can think of two people who have been killed by line twists. Doesn't sound like too much of an exaggeration.
