skygirlpc 0 #1 April 6, 2003 OK after reading another post I got thinking. I chew gum when I jump. I have for a while, I have never had a problem. Has anyone had a problem with gum during a jump? I chew small pieces! Danielle
Tasadin 0 #2 April 6, 2003 Do you swallow??? Ermmm the Gum that is??. *Coughs* i got told by my AFFI on lvl 1 to ditch the gum, I didnt question him I just did it. Suppose if you had a bad landing it might cause an airway obstruction. "If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough."
dkpbxman 0 #3 April 6, 2003 Jumping while chewing gum sounds like you're adding one more thing to the list of things that could possibly go wrong. Many people often, unconsciously, open their mouths while in freefall. We've all seen some of the goofy faces some people make. I can't imagine too many things worse than choking while at terminal speed. Why take the chance?
covey 0 #4 April 6, 2003 My Aff instrucor told me to get rid of it too. They said something along the lines of choking. It sucks too cause I am pilot and always chew gum when I fly. Oh well my ears are starting to get used to it wothout it I suppose. I wonder if any one has actually been choked or if it is just a sky legend? Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide
D22369 0 #5 April 7, 2003 I wonder if any one has actually been choked or if it is just a sky legend? ---> I dont know anyone who has choked on gum in the sky but I did it motocrossing, I always chewed gum while I raced, it kept me from getting dry mouth, I came out of a corner, hit a rut I didnt see while taking in a breath of air through my mouth and whala........it was lodged good, some air was getting passed it and I threw myself onto the crossbar with my stomache giving myself a himelich...... popped it right out. Without having anything to dislodge it in the air would make for a pretty unpleasant situation... RoyThey say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it. covey 0 #7 April 7, 2003 That would be a real shitty feeling to have sticky gum caught in your throat!!! Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide
floormonkey 0 #8 April 7, 2003 I always chew gum. It helps me to concentrate on breathing and not get too stuck on one point in the jump. It seems to help me relax.
riggerrob 643 #9 April 7, 2003 I've chewed gum for my last couple thousand jumps. It helps clear my ears and I have never had any problems with choking.

Picture the incident report in parachutist: "wintnesses report the jumper had a slightly hard landing, stood up and began to gather gear. The jumer then keeled over without warning, and never regained consciouness. The coroner reports a large wad of BubbleYum was lodged in the jumper's trachea..." sillythomas 0 #17 April 9, 2003 Quote I wonder if any one has actually been choked or if it is just a sky legend? Can someone search the incident reports from about 5-7 years ago? I remember a fatal incident in Parachutist from this exact cause.
Tonto 1 #18 April 10, 2003 I chew gum and the only problem I've had is people making fun of me when I'm doing Tandems. I don't allow my AFF students to chew gum as I need to "lip read" them in freefall. I would imagine it could cause me some difficulties if I hooked it in. Maybe I should spit on deployment - but I would go through a lot more gum in a day then... tIt's the year of the Pig.
