Audibles ....

Recommended Posts

I have one and sometimes think it's one too many. Try as I might not to become dependent, I still find myself waiting for the sound. Any time you wait for your audible, you're putting yourself in a bad position. The problem with audible altimeters is they squawk on every jump right before you're supposed to act.

Maybe if I set the first blast at 2,500! Then I wouldn't ever hear it on a normal jump. That's how alarms should work, isn't it? They should keep quiet unless you've fucked up.

I have one. Although i don't rely on it, in an emergency it's good to have. When i had a mal back in December, it was hearing the flatline that told me it was time to give up on the main, and go for the reserve.

Two. Pro-Track and Pro-Dytter. For ff, it's the best way to go. I also believe that together, they are more accurate and dependable than my visual altimeter. I depend on them to tell me when to break off (second only to my eyes watching the ground get bigger). Some people think this is stupid, but you always rely on SOME altimeter, so why not rely on two audibles with good batteries?

Yeah! I set my audibles the Billvon Way™: breakoff and pull altitudes are set 500 feet lower than I actually plan the action. Thus, if my group plans breakoff at 4.5K, I set the Dytter for 4. That means if I hear it before I've started my track, I suck.

I don't even bring my audible on half my jumps. If I have it, cool, if I don't, cool.

I don't use one. It makes more sense to me
to keep my relationship with the ground in mind
and not go for too long at a time without checking.

The analogy I use with my students is the cop in
the rear view mirror.

If I'm driving down the freeway and spot a cop
back there somewhere, I don't obsess on it, I just
keep doing what I'm doing, fly over here, take that
grip, fly over there and so on.

But I don't forget he's back there either and so I
periodically glance at an altimeter or the ground
or the horizon and check my lowness.

Up high I'm pretty relaxed, but down at the bottom
end, when the cop has pulled in right behind me,
I check more often.

To me, skydiving with the planet is part of the jump.
Without that I might as well be in a wind tunnel.

I only have one. I think it's in my glove compartment. I put it there when the batteries ran out. I'm not too worried though. My eyes still work and so does my alti. I'll use it again when I get around to radio shack to buy a battery.

audibles are overrated, imo.

I've always wanted to buy one, but ...
When I was a student I learned how to count and now I realy count very well. I tryed a visual altimeter for a couple of times, but I founded it more useful after the canopy was open. :P
