diverdriver 6 #1 December 9, 2002 Ok, some photos from Day 2. I flew on the first 3 100-way jumps to work out the final aircraft kinks. There were 3 cycles of 3. A different set of otters flew on the three cycles to let everyone get set. The formations came together much smoother today (as expected). We had one glitch with a plane too high on the Skyvan so they left late as they could not see the van unload. Problem fixed. We also practiced our takeoff and landing procedures for the 300-way. We are using the main runway AND the taxiway for departures and landings. It is much faster and effecient. With 14 planes launching this should be interesting tomorrow. There is going to be one more practice load for the 100 way base. So the first 300-way will go up late morning. The pilots will be doing their own "dirt-dive" after this 100-way load getting reading for the taxi out and departure on the 300-way. It's a lot of turbine burning engines so we want to be effecient. I hope we get video cuz this aught to be a hoot. Well, getting tired so I'll just end it there and post some pictures.Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125
robzay 0 #2 December 9, 2002 Thanks for the updates and pictures. It's neat to get a skydiver's and driver's perspective on the event. Now all we need is a wacker's perspective! I hope you all break the record early even though I won't make it out there till Saturday.Blue skies and good luck
robzay 0 #3 December 9, 2002 Just a question concerning the picture of the SDDallas Otter. Is it an earlier model Otter? The nose cone is different, just curious.
Rdutch 0 #4 December 9, 2002 QuoteJust a question concerning the picture of the SDDallas Otter. Is it an earlier model Otter? The nose cone is different, just curious. There is a difference, between a super otter and a regular Otter. the nose is a little smaller, and the cargo door on the back is smaller, on the regular otter. But most non super Otters have been modified with larger engines to make them perform as well as a super otter. Ray Small and fast what every girl dreams of! nacmacfeegle 0 #5 December 9, 2002 So is the wee nosed one the 'standard otter' like the SD Dallas, and SD America? And the big nosed one (who you calling big nose?) the super otter....?-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Rdutch 0 #6 December 9, 2002 You got it. Also the Deland otter is a non super otter but it will fly with the big boys just as good. And the skydive America Otter has -34 engines on it, I think the only one out there with those engines. So it will outfly a super otter any day (well up high at least). diverdriver 6 #7 December 9, 2002 The nose is not what makes it a super otter. It's the engines Super Otters on floats have to have that big rounded nose. Same engines. You don't have to have the nose modified when making a regular otter into a super otter. Chris
nacmacfeegle 0 #8 December 9, 2002 "So is the wee nosed one the 'standard otter' like the SD Dallas, and SD America? And the big nosed one (who you calling big nose?) the super otter....? " But if the engines are retrofitted or modified, or whatever, dash 32, dash 34 etc, you can't really tell the difference on the ground...You don't need a nose job, is that right? So whats the deal with the two styles of nose?-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. riggerrob 643 #9 December 9, 2002 To clarify: DHC6-100 series Twin Otters left the DeHavilland factory with small noses and small engines. 200 and 300 series factories left the factory with long noses and larger engines. "Super Otters" have after-market big engines. Some Super Otters have long noses and some Super Otters have short noses, it all depends on which series they started with. All Otters on floats have short noses.

freeflyguy 0 #16 December 10, 2002 He's a good pilot. If you want a good story, ask him about the time a load of skidivers got out of the Porter, then the elevator jack screw (or something like that) broke , which gave him full down pitch, a nice outside loop, and then landed on the throttle for pitch control true. Don't tell where you heard that. ---------------------------- bzzzz
diverdriver 6 #17 December 11, 2002 Yes, he's a very good pilot. I flew with him on the 1998 record 246-way. Chris
airgord 1 #18 December 11, 2002 Karl and 3MA had a brake lock on touch down after jump 3, slid off the runway, karl powered up to get clear. minimal damage. (wheel, tire, brake caliper). Aero Specialists got him back up for jump 4, Great pilot, got his acft off the active runway with only 2 go arounds. Hell of a nice guy too.

[edited because I just didn't like how my post came off there.] Ok, Karl did blow a tire cuz of the locked break. But he never lost control. He didn't slide off the runway. He was in control through the event. He intentionally turned off the runway into the dirt because of the other otters on final. They went around to ensure seperation. The tire is toast but the rim is fine. Chris
