kai2k1 0 #1 August 15, 2003 Can anyone tell me the "chain of command" in a DZ. I dont have any problems but after reading some posts i think that its something i should know. There's no truer sense of flying than sky diving," Scott Cowan
Scrumpot 1 #2 August 15, 2003 I would guess it can depend from DZ to DZ. Dropzones are private enterprises (for the most part -aside from "clubs") after all! Generally... DZO (or DZO's wife depending on how you look at that ) DZM (manager) Then from there "rank & file employees" as the DZO so designates. Manifest Bitch at most DZ's is who REALLY runs the place /makes the DZ run though! Does this help you any? quade 4 #4 August 15, 2003 Depends on the DZ and at what level you're at. DZO -- The guy that owns the place (well, the bank usually really owns most of it, but you get the idea.) Obviously, he can throw you off the DZ, so clearly he's the guy at the very top level. Manager -- At larger drop zones, the actual DZO may be occupied doing other things, so he puts a manager in charge of stuff. He probably also has the authority to throw you off the property. Chief Pilot (or any pilot for that matter) -- He is responsible for compliance with the FAA FARs. Runs the operation from the actual flying point-of-view. It's his ticket on the line, so if he says you're not going to fly with the blow-up sex doll, guess what, you ain't doin' it. S&TA -- Appointed by the Regional Director of the USPA. He has the authority to suspend USPA Instructor ratings and can probably ground you or throw you off the drop zone if the DZO or Manager has given him permission to do so. Chief Instructor (or any instructor for that matter) -- in charge of students. Usually not in charge of skydivers with licenses, but rest assured that if you're an idiot in front of them, the S&TA, Manager and DZO will eventually know about it. Manifester -- Runs the flight operations from the passenger/ticketing point-of-view. He's the guy (or gal) that you give your jump ticket so as to reserve a "slot" on the plane. "Yeah, whatever." (Dan, we all love you). Load Organizer (aka LO or L/O) -- Possibly a drop zone approved skydiver with the responsibility to make folks feel welcome at the dz as well as gather people into similar groups and design skydives appropriate for their level. This title may also be given to somebody that just does it, but without the authority of the dz behind them. He -may- ask you to sit out a load if your experience level isn't quite up to snuff. If he's doing his job, he'll also do a little safety briefing and maybe a few pin-checks for folks. Loader -- Not the guy behind the hanger after sunset (although . . .). I'm talking about the guy that is in charge of the loading ramp area. He'll usually take a head count to make sure nobody is sneaking onto the airplane without paying. (aka, line-boy or fuel-boy). Guy Sitting Next to the Door -- (aka Heyasshole. As in, "Hey, Asshole! Open the door!") Checks to make sure folks' hands are out of the way and that seatbelts are on or off as required or prudent with relationship to the door. Skydivers -- Jettisonable cargo. Camera Flyers -- Flying rats with electronics.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

voodew1 0 #7 August 16, 2003 As a preson who's DZ has been slammed in this place by people using fake names to keep form being thrown off the DZ, I would say talk to anyone at your DZ before going to a public forum using a fake name to air out your problems. This does nothing to help the situation as you get advice from the unqualified and bored---Sometimes the advice is good, but don't go to a public forum first, make that a last resort.
