selbbub78 0 #1 August 7, 2003 Hey everyone, Granted I haven't had a cutaway yet, but I was just curious if there's any good websites, or articles on what to do, and what NOT to do while on the reserve canopy. I know it sounds simple, but after talking to some people on what they have done during cutaways, i was just wondering if there's any good information out there. mr2mk1g 10 #2 August 7, 2003 do what you like - its a canopy isnt it. I borrowed mine from square one, hooked it up as a main and had some fun on it. I guess though, if I had a cut away, id probably try to fly conservatively so the shit in my pants didnt run down my legs too much. I suppose the only thing you would have to do dif is not to do anything that could cause a cut-away, as you;ve just used your only second chance - so no crew! Other than that, remember that its an F111 canopy so sinks a bit more than the one your used to and that its probably gonna be smaller, but less radical. iowa 0 #3 August 7, 2003 If you aren't low and have time after you figure out where you will land do some practice flares. That is probably the most important thing to do once you have seen that you have time and someplace decent to land. You don't want to be surprised by a sudden unexpected stall. selbbub78 0 #4 August 7, 2003 Maybe i should clarifly a little more on what I'm more concerned about. I was talking to one of my friends from another DZ, who just had her first cutaway. She decided that she was going to use her risers to attempt to catch her gear in the air. She decided that it would have been cool to have everything when she landed. I just want to find information to inform her that this was probably not the smartest idea in the world. Of course i'm pretty new to skydiving, so I could be wrong."Women fake orgasms - men fake whole relationships" – Sharon Stone "The world is my dropzone" (wise crewdog quote) "The light dims, until full darkness pierces into the world."-KDM
beowulf 1 #5 August 7, 2003 When she does have a cutaway I am fairly sure that will be the furthest thing from her mind. Reality would be much different then what she must be imagining. HMM just reread the post before this. Duh
selbbub78 0 #6 August 7, 2003 No that's WHAT happened. She said that her Reserve flew just like her old sabre canopy, and she decided that chasing her gear to catch it while falling was important. Am i the only one that thinks this is nuts?"Women fake orgasms - men fake whole relationships" – Sharon Stone "The world is my dropzone" (wise crewdog quote) "The light dims, until full darkness pierces into the world."-KDM
JeffD 0 #7 August 7, 2003 Ok so what happens if her gear gets wraped around her reserve canopy, partially inflates and then causes her reserve to deflate and start to spiral?!?! I would tell her to get on the ground and let her friends try to catch her main, or watch where it goes so they can get it back... (I sure as hell wouldn't to it)
andy2 0 #8 August 7, 2003 I've only seen a couple reserve rides. All of them the people watched where their main went and followed the freebag (granted that they had fields to land in, I would think fixating on getting your gear could be a BAD thing). As a beginner skydiver when I have my first cutaway/reserve ride I want to be focused on finding and landing myself safely. I can replace the parachute if lost. Thats just my opinion though. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Either your friend is an idiot, shes pulling your leg or you got the wrong end of the stick. Bring her over to the S & TA and ask her to repeat her cut away intentions. iowa 0 #10 August 8, 2003 That is nuts, dangerous and wrong. When you're under your reserve you need to think about yourself and landing safely. Leave the rest of your gear alone. Sure if you have time, keep an eye on it to see where it will land. If you're a student don't even worry about that. That is the DZO and staffs job. Chasing it could get you into trouble real fast. Doing that would put all your focus on the main or freebag and not where you will land. If you did catch it things could get real ugly. Think how much drag a main would have if you had in your hands. Worse yet, in your reserve! The freebag and pilot chute could cause problems if it entangled with your reserve. Leave your shit alone! Keith ''Always do sober what you said you would do drunk. crutch 0 #11 August 8, 2003 QuoteShe said that her Reserve flew just like her old sabre canopy, and she decided that chasing her gear to catch it while falling was important. Am i the only one that thinks this is nuts? No, but I will tell you that I have caught free-bags after a reserve opening. It is kinda of stupid, but the mind works in funny ways. After you realize your okay, you start thinking about how much money that just cost you, you notice things like the freebag floating down with money signs on it. Now, personally I have never had a desire to try and catch the main, but I don't know, I guess the freebag never looks big enough to cause any damage. I will tell you a funny story though. After a huge funnel on the 200-ways back in '92, I pulled while still in a track (scared to death after being entangled with so many people). When I came too(opening shock caused me to see stars like in the cartoons) I had broken 4 lines on opening and had to chop the main. After an uneventful reserve opening, I turned around to catch the free-bag. I had to get in line behind three other canopiesSo, is it a good idea, no, not really. Will people say it is, yes. Do you increase the danger of causing another problem, most definitely! So why do people catch them? See who "the man" is at the end of the day, he the one with a beer in his hand talking about how "cool" it was to save his gear (he has already forgotten about cheating death).blue skies, art
davelepka 4 #12 August 8, 2003 Here's a realistic idea for someone with 39 jumps. If you can remember to hold onto your handles, stuff them into your jumpsuit. If you have a free moment (with 39 jumps your deployment alt. should be high enough, and your reserve big enough that you will have a moment), look straight down in between your feet, and pick out a landmark. This landmark will help you to locate your main and freebag in the event that another jumper doesn't follow them down, or spot them for you. Otherwise focus you attention on finding a safe landing area, and your canopy control with the new canopy over your head. Catching your freebag is a good trick, but wait untill you have a couple thousand jumps to try it. As far as the main goes, anyone who has flown around a cutaway main knows it all risers and bags swinging around, blowing and drifting, and just plain scary.
