Ron 10 #51 June 17, 2003 I see...and understand. I think that since it is the last chance I have before splat...I'll take the risk of it getting pulled early. I do have a smaller metal handle than stock. to reduce the chance of an accidental pull. I think it is the best of both worlds. Tonto 1 #52 June 19, 2003 Does the double velcro'd reserve soft loop on a Tandem vector release at 22 lbs? The reserve handle was pulled by a team mate. tIt's the year of the Pig.
apoil 0 #53 July 1, 2003 QuoteI see...and understand. I think that since it is the last chance I have before splat...I'll take the risk of it getting pulled early. At head down speeds one is risking death or serious injury from a premature reserve deployment. I've pulled my soft reserve pad now under some pretty difficult circumstances. 1) A high speed mal 2) A spinning mal (self induced) at about 2500 feet after loosening the cheststrap. The handle was less than stationary and my CYPRES batteries had died that morning. Only choice was to locate it and pull. I was sitting in by 1500 feet. I don't think I would have located or pulled a metal handle any sooner. So I'm pretty comfortable with my choice. Pity that the Finns aren't.
Ron 10 #54 July 1, 2003 QuoteAt head down speeds one is risking death or serious injury from a premature reserve deployment. Yep...But since I don't do head down but once in a long while....However I could have a mal on every jump...For me I like the hard handle. I am not going to try and tell people that the soft handles are dangerous...However I have had my cutaway handle get tucked under my harness which resulted in a 700 or so foot cutaway. (Ask Paul at the bar...he has some nice video from Tony) I do not wish to take that same chance with my reserve handle."No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers,
Staso 0 #55 July 14, 2003 i must be in the extreme minority here :) i got my D-ring handle for my cutaway recently and I'm gonna put in on my rig. so i'm gonna have to d-ring handles for both reserve and cutaway. my main discipline is speed skydiving and i'm usually all by myself in freefall and i'm not worried about somebody's pulling my handles accidently. so i'm going for sure grip. before i decided to change my pillow cutaway to D-ring i was thinking why originally pillow was a choice for cutaway handle ? just to have different feel for different handles ? stan. -- it's not about defying gravity; it's how hard you can abuse it. speed skydiving it is ... billvon 3,008 #56 July 14, 2003 >Just the ones that catch on doors and wrap your reserve around the >tail, especially if you are unfamiliar with the particular aircraft.. We had a jumper on the 126 ways have his reserve deploy accidentally in the door. Fortunately it was the CASA and he opened cleanly without hitting anything. He had a soft reserve handle.
